FINAL FANTASY XIV Online

benchmark gave me a fairly high score! Yay
but people want to tell me my computer isn't a gaming computer. I can run this and the site I got it from says it is a gaming laptop and so does the company that made the computer itself

I do understand where you're coming from Wolfe. I'm also using a laptop for all my PC gaming since my room lacks the space for a Desktop.

I did go to PC Specialists (They're a custom computer making company) for my laptop and asked my brother who had a better understanding of how to build a gaming laptop to help me build the right model for me.

Safe to say, this little laptop has done well. It still can't do ultra specs like desktops can, but I can get at least high settings and that's good enough for me. ^-^

The benchmark by default uses the lowest possible settings for the game. Use the graphics options to try and see where your limit is and if you're willing to play at that resolution / graphics quality.
The laptop can run the game, but that doesn't mean it's a good experience. Laptops are not designed for gaming, generally. And when they are, they are usually fairly beefy because they need to better manage the heat from being run at 100% for hours on end.
You are putting a lot of strain on the harddrive, battery and CPU. It's just not designed for this type of workload, it doesn't have the powerdraw and cooling that a desktop has.

There are plenty of laptops designed for gaming. (Take the entire ASUS Republic of Gamers line and the Dell Gaming Laptops). But ten to one, most people don't have one.
There are laptops with desktop i7 quad core and SLI GTX 1080. But they are big, heavy, consume a lot of power (I kid you not) and very hot. For example the Eurocom / Clevo has 700w PSU because those puny power brick can't stand up to it. They also run super hot because they put i7-7700k one of the hottest quad core ever in it.

Hopefully NVIDIA MaxQ will change this. I dread Vega for laptop if they can't fix power draw. Pcper did a review on overclocking Vega FE and it draws up to 440w on its own.

I use an ASUS ROG myself, cooling pads work wonders. Plays FFXIV at near max settings without an issue. Granted I also have a MainGear desktop that can handle max settings at 4K, but the options are there if you have the cash.

no such thing as a gaming laptop

Its all specs, what people call it doesn't matter.

I build my own desktops.

oh the irony in this comment is wonderful
final fantasy is also quite a few years old, meaning it can run on older components a bit easier, it doesnt have the latest and greatest models like some games do, reason a lot of us wont qualify a laptop as a gaming thing is because you cant upgrade the things and keep up with the latest games, you gotta buy a new laptop when you cant handle the new ones

The ones like Eurocom and Clevo are essentially desktop in laptop form and unfortunately they are hotter than ASUS ROG. Top end ASUS ROG uses i7-7820HK but Eurocom / Clevo uses i7-6700k and i7-7700k which is twice the TDP. Run very hot unfortunately. They also come with gold rated PSU not power brick lol, the whole kit is heavy enough to grow muscle if you use it for mobile gaming.

The new ASUS ROG with MaxQ is ultra thin, lightweight (2kg) and has GTX 1080.

I maintain that laptops are for business and educational use. Sure, you can game on them, but if you want a decent benchmarking program, boot Minecraft with Feed The Beast mods. If it doesn't crumble into a pile of ashen plastic at that point, it should be able to handle anything else you throw at it.

Doesn't really matter whether or not it can run it, the average consumer laptop just isn't designed for the heat and power requirements of running games, even if you can get a reasonable frame rate.

There are gaming laptops, but they tend to have heavy duty desktop components, they are heavy, and they are loud.

The average laptop, regardless of it's performance, is simply not designed for the demand of PC gaming. You are killing your laptop running games all day.

Laptops can be ok for gaming if they have the very highest mobile GPUs ( 970m, 980m). But they can never equal a decent PC . Thats just a fact. Those are about equal to a GTX 950 and GTX 960. Anything less that that on a laptop and it pretty much sucks for gaming. ANd this guy says a failry high score . i would like to hear what he considers a fairly high score. Plus by default the benchmark uses the very lowest settings.

It's about equal in performance (depending on the resolution), but as I said, laptops are not designed to deal with heat and high power drain. They are designed to give options, not designed to run games.
