Someone can to 20,000 damage a hit, but only be able to hit once every 10 seconds.
But someone doing 2,000 damage a hit but hitting every second...
They both do 2,000 damage per second.
DPS is a measure of damage per time unit.
Some classes hit harder but slower, and other classes hit softer but faster.
To get a feel for your damage per second, you'll need tools from outside the game.
Easiest would be to have yoursaelf or a friend parse you for a dummy fight.
Technically, as parsers are third party programs, they're not allowed by the terms of service, but I'm mentioning it as an option.
Because parsers are valuable and powerful tools for improving yourself in game.
Another option is to go to the Stone Sky Sea dumy for a particular fight and do it.
Then take the time left when you killed it, or the health % left when you ran out of time and input them on this site http://ffxiv.2digitalgames.de/
That will give you a fair enough measure of how much damage you're doing... But not quite as accurate, or with as much detailed information as a parser could.
And, you could do it the hard way, using your combat log, add up all the damage, and divide it by the time the fight took.
Still, its a gun based class and the only one at that.
I am loving MCH in PvP. And I'm someone that does not particularly enjoy PvP. Managing the Heat mechanic is actually fun, since unlike PvE they get all the skills necessary to actually work with it. (Read: Cooldown and the Heated version of the combo.) Not having a turret to worry about means not having to reposition it constantly to maintain damage. And it's great to finishing off fleeing enemies, since they get a Heavy as part of their base kit.
Also amusing was the opposing teams in a Frontline completely ignoring me for the first half of the match, only to single me out in the latter half. They must've noticed those handful of samurai I killed. Poor guys just weren't ready to deflect bullets. (And I want to say that I'm not trying to brag. I am really not very good at PvP. I just had a lot of fun with it and wanted to gush about the experience.)
I saw one in Costa del Sol one shotting everything in fates. He kept doing them for hours.
