Login Queue, why is there one?

So I figured it would be nice to spend some time in FF14, unfortunately I couldn't be more wrong. Position in queue: 1139. About 25 minutes later and I'm only down to position 739.

Why is there even a login queue? Players bought the game, they pay a monthly subscription fee to play, but in the end they can't play at all. Login queues is something I would expect from an MMO 10 years ago, but doesn't have a place in games today. I don't recall any other major MMORPG currently on the market having a login queue, not even some of the f2p ones.

I started playing on Omega (EU), a new world that was listed as having a low population. If the population of world is so low, why is there such a long queue? What about other, older, fuller worlds?

Does Square Enix not have enough money for proper servers than can actually host all their players, despite running a monthly subscription model?

So? If the game is so popular Square Enix should make more than enough money for proper servers.
There are plenty of other popular MMOs out there, non of them have problems hosting their players.

Easier said than done. Something like that takes an arseload of money and can take months.

And yet in another thread you said if OP is in congested world he will get QUE, so if both congested and no congested have QUE what to do then?

There's a lot of players moving to the new worlds if you actually read what I type.

It's only because the expansion has been released. I suspect by next week and the week after things will have settled. Traffic in an MMO when an expansion hits can and will be a nightmare. In SE's favour at least Stormblood's launch wasn't as terrible as when ARR first released back in 2013

When GW 2 released HoT people couldn't even log in and those of us that could got dc'd every 5 - 10 minutes for a long while, happens all the time when an mmo releases a new expansion.

i dont knowh if it stil can but there are free tansfers to less populated servers i went from cerebus to to omega eu longest queue 25 ppl 2 min later i was in

I need to remember this, as someone was saying to me that Omega had huge queues xD

Have been sitting in queue for 31 minutes now.
And still:
Players in queue: 220

Started around 1350.

Actually it started with instant log ins. Then 1 player in queue. Then 25-35 players in queue for couple of days. Then that increased to around 50 players in queue on average. -> 300 and now over 1000.
