Are you sure it's new accounts only?
I just read this on IGN: "All free trial accounts, even those that have expired, will be revived so that players can return to their character and resume where they left off."
http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/03/28/final-fantasy-14-free-trial-removes-time-restriction
I played the 14 day trial towards the end of last year but never felt compelled enough to purchase the game and sub. I wouldn't mind taking a second look at the game, and I would much rather jump back in with the toons I created rather than starting again from scratch.
Not all accounts get revived. Accounts that have been inactive for 90 days are deleted for good.
"We are pleased to announce that the 14-day limitation on the Free Trial has been removed and the adventure can continue for as long as you want! Additionally, users who participated in the Free Trial but never upgraded to the full game will be able to continue where they left off with their account.
***Please note that we will be removing the limitations on existing Free Trial accounts sequentially after the maintenance has completed. If you are unable to log in right away, we ask that you wait a bit and try again at a later time.

In other words, if you can't immediately log in on your old trial account, give it some more time. Once the maintenance stage and "limitation removals" are complete, all eligible account owners will be able to log in and pick right up where they left off. :)
I've read nothing related to what you're saying as it relates to the trial. Perhaps this is true of "retail" accounts which allowed a lapse in service for a period greater than 90 days. I'm pretty sure this does not apply to TRIAL accounts.
Just think about it. I couldn't imagine a scenario where Square-Enix would actively invite trial account holders back to their game only for the customer(s) to discover their accounts have been.... permanently deleted? That would make no sense.
If I had to guess, I would say no, because you purchased a retail copy of the game. You're no longer considered a trial account holder.
You should e-mail support just to be sure, though.
It does raise the question of people abusing it to create secondary accounts for more marketplace slots though surely? Or can't trial accounts access the market?
Because as it is now being unable to send stuff through account is astonishingly annoying after years of FFXI. Though I seem to recall seeing a snippet that sending restrictions were being changed in the upcoming big 4.0 update. It escapes me exactly what it was now.
[Thank You] for clearing that up.
I can resume play with my previously created toon and take him to Level 35, for free. Anyone in a similar situation can do the same.
Absolutely false, I know for a fact paid accounts do not get deleted after any amount of time.
Yes, yes I can. If they haven't made the decision to buy the game after 90 days, they're probably not coming back at all. Better to delete that (Not like any major progress is lost) and free up the server space for paying customers.

I just logged in to the game on that account and had a look around. I don't really know what you people are talking about with this account deletion stuff. I haven't played on that account since the end of last April, and everything is still there (items, gear, etc.) and my progress is completely intact. Feel free to do the math.
Don't get me wrong, I understand what you're saying about how it would make more sense to delete trial accounts (if any accounts really require deletion due to inactivity), but in the context of this promotional announcement, Square-Enix (or any other company) would NOT inform the gaming press or send out mass-mailers of their own to thousands of former trial players specifically inviting them back to 'continue their journey right where they left off" if all those accounts were queued for or already subject to deletion.
