If I recall correctly, you need to reach Second Lieutenant rank in your current GC, then you're given permission to change your grand company by talking to the recruiter NPC for one of the other two GCs.

So.. I need to rank up in the GC I don't want to be in, in order to join the one I want to be in?

That sounds.. extremely illogical?

Deciding what GC you want to be in is supposed to be a Very Big Decision(tm), hence the restriction.

Needlessly restrictive? Yeah, probably. But there is a degree of logic when you think about it from the view of enforcing tough decisions. I joined Maelstrom because they had the better uniform. I should really get around to swapping to the Flames. Nanamo-sama!

I see.. I see. Guess I'll stay with the Flames for now. Don't like Ul'dah too much

Well now I'm curious.
Are there any differences between the GC's?
I know players tend to join the company of the city they end up in when they first begin but I wasn't aware of some kind of differences between the companies.

Different uniform appearances, different PvP groups (unless you're a Frontline Freelancer, so that one doesn't really count), and a few different items available for Seals: Pets and furniture.

You can keep them once you swap GC, so you can get all three leader portraits for your house and all three pets.

Oh, and I think the GC salute differs between factions, though I'm not sure off-hand.

Hi. Do you know... uhm... Do you keep your Rank in your GC if you leave and come back later? Or do you have to start from scratch if you do that???

Yes, you keep your rank if you leave. That much I know. I know people who have maxed all three.

I made the decision a long time ago when I first started playing. Had a break for probably a year or so and now I'm back at it again. Not feeling Uh'duh and the Flames.
