Scoring and Spike bits

So just got this game and love it. But I have a question, after you beat a level and your score is calculated what do the grey spike bits under it mean? I've got them to glow white a few times.

I think each one represents a score threshold you can pass. While running through a level there is a score progress bar, and each time you pass it it raises the bar to the next point. You get one of the white spikey "bit" pieces for each of the score thresholds you surpass it seems.

It's the TRON version of the number of "stars" you received based on your score - a fairly common concept in games.
