The first one was on the NES

I never played that one, but there was a remake of Pirates on the Sega Genisis.

I played the Sega version. There's a bug to it that freezes the game after you rescue your sister. The bug exists in teh cartridge and in any emulator. Otherwise it's the same game with 16bit graphics.
Later there was a game called "Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat" that was around in the XBox and Playstation era. Same idea as Pirates, but you control a female captain, and there was a little more open world movement involved. It didn't take off in popularity as well though.

I say all that to say this game is already a remake of a remake... Of a remake?
Actually the original called Sid Meier's Pirates! was released on the Commodore 64 in 1987. Then it was ported to the Apple II (1987), then later to the PC (1987), Apple IIGS (1988), Macintosh (1988), Amstrad CPC (1988), Atari ST (1989), Amiga (1990) and Nintendo Entertainment System (1991).
The Pirates! Gold remake was released for Windows 3.1, DOS, Macintosh, and Sega Genesis in 1993. It was also released on CD for the Amiga CD32 in 1994 with enhanced CD audio tracks.
So this is actually a remake of the remake :)

The Controls... That is about all I would REALLY ask be remade in this game. Maybe fix the dancing, cause ♥♥♥♥ I hate the dancing... But yes, All in All, Its damned near Perfection Incarnate...
Sid Meier Pirates 2, I would 1000000000% support. Just Dont change the formula too much, ya know? Keep it SIMILAR to this.
Just found this thread and would love a sequel/remake, been over 15 years since the last one so its time!
Same open world
More missions
Better dialogue & graphics
New ideas...
Male or female characters w/some ability to design the character look and choose some background.
More choices on the romance part than dancing (still have some dancing). If you select a female character then perhaps you romance an officer, the governor, or possibly even the daughter...no doubt some pirates chose that lifestyle...make it available. You might pick up more fans.
You could add spies...for example, you could cultivate, romance, etc, servants of the governor, tavern, etc.
Add the ability to work with other pirates...named pirates or otherwise, based on reputation.
On fighting / battles, it's always been more of a strategy game so I wouldn't really change the those with the exception of battles.
Make THAT game and I'd put am order in right now for it...honestly, if it was $100 I'd pre-order right now.
I've given ideas I'd like, but other than more options to current choices and the ability to design your character's look (male or female) I wouldn't change many things at all.
Some additional thoughts, ranging from general ideas to a couple specifics:
- Could expand the map of this game - at least as an option - to include more of the South American coast and add Portugal as another European power.
- Similarly, expansion packs to allow the option of playing this game in other parts of the world that also had piracy during the Age of Sail. Indian Ocean, South China Sea / Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean (Barbary corsairs) all come to mind. Perhaps also privateering during the American Revolution or War of 1812, either as an expansion pack or a spin-off game with similar game play.
- Implementing more robust reputation and relationships with pirates and Indians. Possibly could make true piracy - attack *all* countries - a more viable strategy.
- Perhaps an option to use multiple ships in combat at the same time. This one would require some effort to get the details correct, and it should only be an option (not required). The concept, however, starts with an ability to divide cannons and crew between two (or more) ships prior to naval combat. You could then toggle between control of ships during combat, with general AI instructions ("try to board", "keep a distance and fire cannons", etc.) for the ship(s) that you aren't currently controlling.
- Ability to take less than all of the available recruits at taverns. In other words, if 30 sailors offer to join your crew, you'd have a slider option and could take only some fraction of them. Helpful when trying to keep a crew to a certain size to manage morale. Should be an easy detail to change.
- Ability to choose which cargo to dump when selling or abandoning a ship. Also should be an easy detail to change.
I will buy a new version : "Sid Pirates 2!"
EVEN IF:
Given graphics are medium quality,
even if there are no leaderboard and Multi Online Play like Sea of Thieves...
WHY?
the essence is the story line and game-play
You will notice lot of promising Pirate games try to break in the market but miss the basics
of any game:
- story line
- game mechanics
- controller combinations
That's it !!!!
I would like to see a Version 2 WITH:
Improved Gameplay do have an open world so that the game have new real end
-Improved /Nondeterministic AI based map generator - you cannot predict the map you will get like it is now but with More variety
- An automatic treasure and island and harbour generator, continuing add more as one play longer
What the current version of this game great were:
- Sort of a Random treasure map finder
- No mystical creatures like Kraken & Zimbie nonsense - keep the game REAL.
A new version to keep the characters realistic as the first version.
The original actually had more content and better features
