He just absorbs them and uses them as batteries.

remember the bit about having a human and monster soul in the same body giving that power?
you're mangling the bit about monster souls. only boss monster souls can persist after death. i dont think alphys ever esperimented with draining a soul out of a still living monster directly into a vessal. all of her experiments were with "fallen down" monsters, which seems to be a kind of coma monsters go into just before they die of natural causes.
the real question is how everyone got restored (not really, just a sec...) because alphys also noted that monster bodies disintegrate when the soul is removed. the easy answer, of course, is asriel just used hyper god powers.
