Strange game, the only winning move is not to play.

In all seriousness I've tried all the suggestions and they've never seemed to work for me. 10g is way too much imo

I've Encouraged the snail every second for 8 seconds, then stopped.

That's...the only way I won. Once.

encourage your snail a lot of times without overexerting it.

Then let it run and encourage it after some time, when it starts losing speed.

You should win by a big margin if done right, or just barely lose if done wrong.

Don't hit it too hard or you'll set it on fire

ok, so if you actually WANT anything out of this, then here's what you need to do

you actually don't want your snail to win

what you ACTUALLY want is for it to lose by a /small/ margin

and that's how you "win"

If you want your snail to win: Encourage it about 10-15 times, but making sure not to do it too fast (you want to wait until the exclamation mark over its head goes away). Once that's done, watch it win

If you want to tie/lose by a small margin: Same idea as above starting out (though I think I did more like 8-10 times), but once your snail gets close to the end, keep encouraging it (though not too fast) to keep it in place as the other snails catch up. This can potentially take a bit of practice, since you need to keep in mind your snail will be faster than the others (so you'll likely want the other fastest snail to be a bit ahead of yours before you let yours move)

As others mentioned above, the best outcome is actually losing by a small margin, which gets you an additional 10 gold. Not really worth farming, though I'd say it's worth doing once for the dialogue.

I've actually done this. The snail just sits there, and the delay when you encourage guarantees a loss haha. I believe the only time this actually works is if you do the snail race several times, doesn't work the first time around. Tbh doesn't seem like it's worth the trouble.

Hmm, you sure you weren't just encouraging too quickly/too many times? Cause I'm pretty sure it's possible on a first try. The way it works is that while encouraging delays the snail from moving, each encourage also makes it a bit faster afterwards. If you encourage too rapidly though by mashing or the like, then the snail won't move even after you stop encouraging.

You're right it's not really worth the trouble though, especially if you're finding it tricky. It can be amusing to see the different outcomes, but it's only a couple lines of dialogue with each, so it's pretty minor.

Unless there's a sword that shoots fireballs as a reward for winning, why does it matter?

Winning = Hit z every second for a total of 8 or more times, then leave it alone.
Small margin = Hit z every second for a total of exactly 7 times, then leave it alone.

Was wondering the same thing. I was button-mashing my ass off only to find out I got the snail too riled up :(

The trick is to tap the button in rhythm to the music about 8 - 10 times. Once you get the knack of it you can farm him for 30g every win.

EDIT: When you WIN win, you get 9g. If you're just shy of winning, he feels bad for your snail and gives you 30g.
