Consider the choice to 'use force' here a gentle nudge to get him to wake up, but after that just be as gentle and kind as possible.

I got stuck at that part too, but it turns out that "use force" doesn't actually hurt him. You'll enter a fight with him but then you can say nice things to him and become his friend.

I'm not even sure it would negatively affect you if you "kill" him in battle, since he just floats away, as he's a ghost and can't die

hate to burst your bubbles since you're all trying to be helpful, but I think he's just being a smartass about how "use force" isn't quite the proper term for what you end up doing when you choose the option.
