genocide run- the ruins
mild spoilers

when you leave the ruins, you are unable to come back. however, i kept running around in the ruins and not getting more encounters (i killed the vegetable npcs, and all other npcs went missing) so i went ahead, killed toriel, and moved on.

is it possible for me to have accidentally ended the run right there?? im nervous that i've worked too far and gone too far ahead (im at undyne) and that my run already ended in the ruins. how can i tell if i'm doing this right?

Music will change and encounters will just have a message that says "But nobody came."

You'll one-shot most bosses. There are only two that are any threat to you.

Save points will have a counter saying how many enemies are left in the area.

And people will head for the hills, leaving most areas empty.

If this didn't happen to me in the ruins, should I start over?

My understanding is that you have to actually see "but nobody came" in every major area, or at least before every major boss. This is to be sure you've actually killed everyone that will fight you.

This is just really frustrating because I wasn't having any new encounters in the ruins at all so I figured I was good to go. I'll probably start the run over in a bit to be sure, but it's kinda annoying

You have to very specifically go hunting to get a genocide run. You psychopath.

I mean, I know that, but going and walking around for 20+ minutes with no encounters is frustrating.
i hope im not too late but i just did a true genocide one,and yes,to know that you've killed everything, toriel included, the saving star must say only Determined and the encounters should be empty, however i also noticed that for like 15 minutes i didnt had any encounter,so just keep wandering around till you find the last ones!

You have to kill the dummy, the initial Froggit ( the hardest thing) and all random encounters before moving on to murdertown.

You monster.

I'm sure the OP has already found out the answer and moved on but for others crossing this thread (like me) who are wondering the same thing and have not found the answer, in order to start the true genocide run you must go through the ruins until Toriel leaves and you reach the room with the first save point without Toriel. DO NOT LEAVE THIS ROOM until you have killed every monster there. You will have to walk around and grind, which can take minutes of no encounters, until you get the first encounter of "*but nobody came." Then the music will change. You can save and replenish your health at the save point as many times as you need. If done correctly you should not even encounter the vegetoids or any other monsters after that room until your fight with Toriel.

If you don't kill enough monsters to get the "But nobody came" message before you engage the boss in combat, you will be set back to a Neutral route. If you deviate from the path, the foreboding slowed music and strange reactions from NPCs will be reverted back to the Neutral run settings.

it's for pretty much every boss. there is a point where you're pretty much locked in, closer to the end. also, later on in some places there is warning text advising you not to keep going unless you're sure you want to.

you should kill all enemies and get the "but nobody came" message in an area before you get to a boss. this is pretty much every boss, and by boss it means like, the final boss of the area you're in.

if you have not done this, then you probably have set yourself on the neutral run at this point
