I can't remember if it's actually stated, but given the items you find and the general belief people have about it, it seems like most if not all of the previous souls were children. But that's just what I was able to gather from seeing what other people have said about the game.
If it is true, it kinda paints the monsters in a different light when you think about it. They want freedom at any cost, including child murder.
Or, y'know, Bratty and Catty probably sold it to them. They will happily sell the main character a gun.
Good question. Same deal with the frying pan and apron; seems more like things an older person might have. Like I said, I'm just going off of what I've read from a few different places.
Well, I did say that I couldn't remember if it was actually stated, and that the popular belief from what I saw was that most, if not all, of the souls were children. Said beliefs were from various places, though, so yeah, I guess I should take them with a pinch of salt.
For some, it makes more sense then others. Ribbon and toy knife, bandanna and gloves, tutu and ballet shoes, glasses and notebook...All of those seem plausible for children. The apron and pan and the cowboy hat and gun, however...Yeah, the more I think about it, the more they seem like they could be for older people. Then again, all of the items could be worn/wielded by the main character, so make of that what you will.

I assumed they were talking about their assignment as lookouts for humans. Like, they showed up in Winterland suddenly after Asgore/Undyne assigned Sans and Papyrus to capture/kill any humans they found. But you might be right; lots of people think Sans might be human since he seems to bleed when cut. But he also might've just been drinking ketchup; after all, Papyrus disintigrates into dust.
In their defense, monsters are really, really weak and a child presents a serious threat to them. Think about it, in the war, they didn't get to kill a single human. And a single child comes to their world and is able (if he want) to murder everyone without much of a problem. The wounds caused by monsters can be healed up by eating ice cream.
If an adult came to the monster world, they'd stand no chance at all against him.
No, asgore, toriel worked for being endearing and earned it.
She has no story-centric murders on her hands to explain herself for, that's why she can do what she does.
You can't just do the same and ignore THAT kind of baggage!
A "fit of anger" doesn't rationalize a systematic, calculated hunt that presumably goes on for years and decades.
The games biggest weakness is not fleshing that particular character out enough imo which is a shame because how would you even portray him killing 6 people while maintaining his cheerful demeanor in the games typical, upbeat tone without making him appear like a complete monster?
Because that's kinda the way I see him, a colossal douche to put it mildly and the game gave me very little to improve that impression he left.
All we know is that he stayed in the barrier, hoping no more humans would find their way into the underground instead of leaving and collecting 6 more souls after getting 1 -as toriel points out in the good ending- but that still means he killed 6 humans.
People who probably had no intent of harming anyone, if the pacifist run is anything to go by.
That duality could have made for an intriguing character if further explored but, alas... wannabe teddybear pretending not to be a horrible person it is.
I really think he is the worst character in the game and thankfully/regrettably his on-screen-time is brief.
More room for flowey. I love flowey. So much depth to him...
Perhaps the creator intentionally left that side of him out of the game so you could come up with your own theories, but yes...
It does strike a problem. By all means, remain a mostly kind, cheerful person, but at least give some indication and sorrow for the lives taken to try and set the monsters free. Even if children still pose a dangerous threat due to how weak monsters are, children are still children.
I love Flowey, though. At first I wanted to strangle the rotten thing, but now...
Curse you, hidden character depth, curse you.
