What is this weird switch?
I was in the core when I found this sign and switch: http://imgur.com/icxNVFj

What does it mean or at least what does it do? It doesn't seem to be required since I don't remember even seeing it on my first playthrough.

It's one of two options to open the path to the end. On your first playthrough, you've probably went to the left and solved the little shooter puzzle. The second option would be to go North and get through several encounters before you reach the switch which accomplishes the same thing.

Generally speaking, if you read the signs you probably would never use that switch, though you might go up that way during Genocide runs (even if hitting the switch is unnecessary) since the encounters are scripted to happen unless you already reached the kill count, making it easier to get a few forced-battles when it reaches the point of taking minutes for you to get them randomly.

You can disable the forcefield in the CORE by either solving the puzzle (Sage's Path) or battling monsters and flipping the switch you showed in your post (Warrior's Path). Only one action is required though.

EDIT: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ got ninja'd again.

EDIT 2:

On my first (and second) playthrough I thought you have to do the all the actions (solving the puzzle and flipping the switch). I had no idea I can do only one of them xD.

Ah. I was really taking my time with clicking and reading EVERYTHING on my first playthrough, one of the signs explicitly state how both of them opened the way, but it kind of implied you only had to choose one path.

I was exploring at that time so I didn't really paid attention to the signs. Oh well.

...or you can skip all that by standing in the front of the forcefield until it disables itself.
