The named character is the one who first fell into the underworld, and is the one who befriended Asriel and led him astray.
If you hike all the way back to very start of the game, you can have a final chat with what's left of Asriel, and he'll imply Frisk could have been going through a really bad time in his/her life to willingly go to a place where no humans ever return from. I'm kind of surprised that Asriel himself doesn't ask you to put him/Flowey out of his misery for good after the true end. He'll be stuck forever down there stewing in hatred like some biblical figure.
The true lab videos are about Chara not Frisk.
Chara effectively commited suicide. For diabolical and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ reasons.
For example, if you found the coffins off to the side of Asgore's throne room, the one with Frisk's-color heart on the lid has Chara's name, and is empty. You find out that this is because Chara's body was taken and buried under some flowers after their death. Those flowers were the same type as the ones used in Alphys' Determination-injection experiments, and so its possible they could have actually BEEN determination-infused flowers.
If that was the case, it would be entirely possible that the Determination seeped out of the flowers, into Chara's body underneath, bringing it back to life, but missing MOST of their memory (and thus having a clean start) because Chara's soul had already left their body and gotten absorbed by Asriel.. that explains the flashes of dialogue you get directed towards Chara here and there, it's old memories resurfacing.
Another clue to support this theory is that you start the game wearing bandages, and if you went back and examined Chara's coffin AFTER beating the game, there's an added line about there being some sort of bandages on the floor beside it... although I can't recall if it was possible to open the Stat menu before meeting Flowey/Toriel that first time, so it could very well be those bandages were applied by her when she heals your (possible) flower-inflicted wounds... or for wounds you might have sustained if this theory is completely bogus and Frisk DID fall into the Ruins.
Also consider that some characters "mistakenly" recognize you as Chara, and only later say things like "But you couldn't be them, you're too much nicer". Unless Frisk just happens to look THAT much like Chara. I guess they could have been from the same village, or maybe all humans just look alike to monsters.
That gives a REALLY sad twist to what Asgore says during his fight, if he's killed you once and you talk to him. "You tell him he's already killed you once before. Asgore says he believes you." Or something close to that. It's possible that Asgore really does think you're Chara, and this line could be reference to the guilt he feels over Chara dying while he was taking care of them... and why he doesn't think he deserves your mercy. Asgore definitely seems like he's seeing a ghost the whole time leading up to the fight, although that could just be because of his apprehension towards taking any human's life.
But yeah, that's my theory, that Frisk could be Chara's remains reanimated 1000 years later.
Yeah, I tried to think this way, but for the whole over 16 hours' playing process, I was called with my character name every time I died. I am not good at STG so at last even temy's armor offered me a big discount($750). That makes me believe that I am the character. So it is really disturbing that they keep calling me Frisk.
I will have to agree that the coffin for Chara is perplexing. But...
Have either of you seen/noticed the other coffins in the Pacifist ending?
....
They are all open. The six dead humans are all alive again.
So, the whole Jesus-style reanimation thing that I first thought of when it said there were only wrappings left in the tomb may have well been another biblical reference.
I don't know how to judge but this may not be a perfect design for me. The changing of Chara is some kind of ludonarrative.
Now I am going to step on my way back to castle. What the hell~
Chara led all 6 humans before Frisk giving them hope by momentarily giving them the power to SAVE and RESET. Only to abandon each one of them to die at the hands of Asgore so Chara could eventually gain all 7 human souls they needed to break the barrier.
Frisk happened to be the 7th and final human Chara needed for their plan. Instead of abandoning him like the others. Chara (observing Asriel/Flowey's actions) decided to allow Frisk to use their SAVE and RESET ability as they pleased. However, in the end Chara would always reset everything until Frisk became bored and curious enough after the relentless cycles.
Eventually Frisk would break and murder every single monster just to see how it would change things. Then with the combined powers of the human souls, including Frisk's, and all the monster souls Frisk absorbed by murdering every boss monster... Chara would become a god able to destroy everything, humans and monsters.
YOU as the player are role-playing as Chara throughout every cycle of the game, leading Frisk with your DETERMINATION. Frisk is just the avatar you happen to be using. Of course however, when the Genocide Ending happens and Chara comes back, they're so strong that even your role-playing can't control them anymore.
