Imagine If This Game Was Released 20+ Years Ago
Since this game is based off of old-school RPG's, I could've seen this game coming out in the mid-1990's (except for the soundtrack, which its MP3 format would've screwed everything up). I wonder how significany of an impact, not just to gaming but the culture surrounding gaming as a whole would've reacted back then. Considering how huge it has been in 2015, I wonder how MASSIVE it would've hit the 90's.

Any major game now could have impacted the gaming culture if it was released back in the 80's. We've advanced so much in story telling and gameplay, that literally almost any game now could have had an impact.

Yes, but Undertale's simplistic style makes it comparable to games of the era. The main thing I can't imagine is people going from basic linear hero RPG to getting dunked on right in the feels with Undertale's overall plot.

Considering the specific time period, most people would not have cared, at least for a while. Gaming culture became big sometime through the 2000's. This game most likely would have been ignored in the 80's/90's and dug up later by some hardcore gamer.

If it was released in late 1995, it would have been shat on for having 8-bit graphics.

The graphics wars were much bigger back then than they are now, believe it or not.

To be a 2D game in the mid-late 90's was suffering.

Not sure it would make much a difference, at least, as much as Earthbound made. It would probably just a niche game.

That's why the Game Boy was so unpopular, right?

It wouldn't be a hit in the 90s because people who were playing video games back then were kids and most would not understand the complexity of the game.

If this game was released 20 years ago, it wouldn't have been released 20 years ago.

What you are missing is that Undertale wouldn't be possible 20 years ago. At least not on consoles. Despite using 8-bit graphics for the most part, the engine of the game is somewhat sophisticated, and graphics are more detailed than they look.

Sexuality in video games was heavily censored back then, and it still is today.

UnderTale is just lucky it's an Indie game, or it'd need an ESRB rating and that just sounds like bad news.

Sexuality was handled in a weird way back then. When Final Fight was released, people thought it would be unacceptable to hit a woman, so they turned Poison into a drag, because somehow back then it was ok to beat the crap out of gays. Somehow Poison even managed to become a symbol of progressiveness.

It would get T.

The ESRB wasn't the problem in the 1990s, fear of theocratic politicians and their base was. That resulted in Nintendo in particular taking things hilariously far to the point publishers/developers were scared of NoA and did real dumb stuff like holy = pearl or white.
