Toriel and the lack of an alternative ending
Should probally warn there's spoilers ahead. Nothing major, but still better safe than sorry.

You know something that really rustled me with this game? At the start of it, after you're done with the tutorial and finally go inside the house in the ruins, and then proceed to ask Toriel how to leave the ruins, she'll go down the basement to do something, asking you, if you tag along behind her, to go upstairs while she destroy the entrance to the ruins. If you comply, go upstairs, wait who knows how long in hopes that she'll be done destroying the entrance, and go downstairs, she'll still be down there, ready to fight you and warn you to go upstairs again. And this never ends, no matter how long you take to go downstairs again.

Now, remember that we're talking about Toby Fox's game. This guy made a game that mentions all of the player's actions all throughout the gameplay, tied together everything you do, caused certain consequences depending on how the protragonist went through the game and so on, so I doubt this was just a lazy way to make sure the player continued playing the game by facing Toriel regardless. So maybe this is a character flaw in itself. Why wouldn't Toriel destroy the door, regardless of if the player decided to stay or not, when she had the chance? Was she maliciously hoping the child would succeed in leaving the ruins, whether that meant her own death or not would be consequential, because she knew either the last soul would finally be gathered because of Frisk's inevitable death, or because she also knew that the child would manage to kill her own ex in attempt to go home? Is there a chance that, despite her personality, there was still a part of her that showed she was more caring about the monters' freedom than she was to humans' safety? Sure, she seemed to play off the good motherly role pretty well, acting to genuinely care about the child's safety, but that doesn't hide the fact she straight up did not hesitate in fighting with them in a battle they knew she wouldn't win, no matter how and when you faced her, even if you decided to flee from the fight several times. The least I expected from avoiding the fight with her was an ending where she sealed the door and I just lived in the ruins forever and ever. Or 'till the child found an alternative to leave the ruins. Either way, the way she acted is still pretty fishy.

Well, I need a second opinion about this. It's something that's been bothering me for quite a while now.

She lied. She was telling Sans to take care of you.

Well given that she didn't destroy the entrance before with the other six, one could assume it's possibly a test of sorts to see what you'll do.

You do get a little extra something if you go to bed again after Toriel tells you to go upstairs, but it's nothing major. So possibly could have squeezed something else in there. :flowey:
