Undertale

So is there anything that breaks a peaceful run of the game?
Just bought this and want to run through the game without killing anyone. So as long as I don't kill an enemy by attacking, I'm good? Or are there Actions that also break the run? I took a bite out of vegetoid in the starting area and it ended battle by restoring some of my health, so I hope that doesn't count as killing him and ruin the run already :p

Don't kill anyone and you'll be fine. That's the only advice you need for a peaceful run.

And you can escape every battle you encountered too. But, well, that makes you have 0 money.
Just make sure to buy something from the spiders while in the ruins. It doesn't necessarily make it impossible to complete a pacifist run, but if you don't do it then it's going to be a lot harder to "fix" later on. You also can't go back into the ruins where Toriel lives once you exit.

The other things you MUST do are date Papyrus, and take a break with Sans when he asks. There is one other thing you can do, but it isn't required. Though I recommend doing it before you meet Asgore for more story. (Note: you will have to do it anyway for the true pacifist ending)

The other thing is that you actually are forced to get the neutral ending first. If you've done everything correctly after getting the neutral ending you can continue from your last save and finish what needs to be done for the true pacifist ending. Keep in mind some stuff can only be done after beating the neutral endboss.

So it looks like you only get one save file, does it put a little mark or something on it for each ending you get? Does it matter if I backup and create an alternate save file for genocide?
Thanks for the input
You can ignore my statement about buying from the spiders, apparently it only leads to different dialogue. :P

The game remembers previous playthroughs as this effects some dialogue in the game. Going through with the Genocide Run a single time even changes part of the pacifist ending permanently. Which is why many stop after fighting Sans...

I'm curious about you taking a bite out of Vegetoid.

I'd check your xp and make sure you don't have any.

eating vegetoid doesn't screw you over (although you need to spare at least one of them to get its yellow text for the credits)

Simple tip, as long as you don't have EXP you're fine.
I remember some anecdotes that say in the demo version, eating a Vegetoid gives EXP. AFAIK, this doesn't happen in the final version.

The only indicator that your run is pacifist is your lack of increased LV and EXP. If you're at 1 and 0 respectively, you're a pacifist. Even if you've engaged in non-lethal fisticuffs from time to time. Nothing else can 'break' a Pacifist run. Even being a meanie poop head and taking more candy than you should from the dish.

That's a good tip, thanks. I'm going to get the neutral and pacifist on my first run...unless the new dialogue is worth restarting for?

If you correctly done pacifist on your first run, Flowey will tell you to just load your save file and befriend everyone. This includes Papyrus, Undyne and Alphys. Then the true pacifist ending will automatically happen.

I took a bite from the vegetoid, still went pacifist.

As long as you have 0 EXP you are good.

The only things that I know of that break Pacifist is having a none-zero kill count and not giving Undyne water in the hotlands. Nobody seems to be mentioning that bit... not sure if abandoning the Monster Kid would do it either.
