Pacifist run ruined?

Spoilers for anyone who hasn't started the game

I got to the fight with Toriel and I thought it was one of those situations where I had to work her health down so she would let me spare her.

I got her to about half health and it still didn't work so I decided to attack a few more times and on the very next hit I did 370+ damage and instakilled her

So I reloaded and the dialogue for her had changed and she said
"Why are you looking at me like you've seen a ghost"

I'm aware that if I kill anything the game cuts me out of the "True" ending. This wasn't an intentional kill and I thought I was supposed to for her to let me spare her.

Am I locked out of the true ending now? or can I continue with my current save and still get the true ending?

If you reload to a previous save (before you killed Toriel), you're still able to get the pacifist ending. Flowey will remark how you killed her then tried to reverse your mistake, but that's as far as it goes.

Kills are only truly counted for an ending if you save afterward.
The proper way to spare Toriel is repeateadly choose the "Spare" option until she gives in.
Also, while most enemies can be spared if they're low on health, every enemy that can be spared has a method to spare them without dealing a single point of damage to them.

No, you're fine. I did the same as you - accidentally killed her, later reset and was still able to get the Pacifist ending. As long as you meet the criteria ( don't gain any EXP, and make friends with everyone ) you should be fine.

Thanks for the fast response everyone, I had a feeling I was doing it wrong by attacking her but I hadn't found any alternative. Talking did nothing, and sparing didn't appear to do anything.

Glad to know I'm not locked out of the good ending, I have no intention of fighting anyone and was worried that my mistake would ruined my entire experiance.

You gave up on your quest for friendship and attacked your cute goat mom. As far as I'm concerned you've already failed.
