Undertale
Turn off music?
I know I am going to get some hate for this but I really dislike the music. It is WAY to loud. It muffles all the sound effects. Is there any way to turn off/turn down the music? I will be glad to see when devs finally realize that it is called BACKGROUND music for a reason. :KOh:

Interesting... I mean, I also grew up listening to NES and SNES music. I won't deny it, some games has horrible repetitive music, while others actually managed to create beautiful melodies, even with the hardware limitations at the time. Retro games today, well, there's A LOT of retro games now, and I'm not saying that's bad, but it's starting to get old again. Sure, some devs actually know what they're doing and makes good retro games that actually make you feel nostalgia, while others apparently went with the retro vibe because they either don't know how to draw sprites, or they didn't have enough money to make a more complex game. Again, I'm not against retro games, I love them, but now that there's a lot of them, devs need to make an extra effort. A lot of people love retro game music, but you're the first one person I've met that doesn't like it.

Hopefully, Toby will tell you how to mess with the game's code so you can turn off the music. I actually tried to see what's inside Undertale's file folder, but I only found the exe file.

Toby just got back to me via Email. Sadly there is no way to adjust the music volume so I guess I will get a refund. Thank you all for the conversation and please do enjoy your game.
...Uh, no offense buddy - but if you're asking for a refund after you've played a couple minutes of a game.. because you're too stubborn to turn off your sound and you've only heard probably, like, two tracks of background music..

...You don't really deserve to play this wonderful, crafty, intelligent game in the first place. Sorry, and I hope you enjoy whatever other games you play. This is just such a weird post. If it's such a problem for you, next time just ask a question on one of the forums dedicated to this game before you spend ten bucks.

You could mute the sound, and just bleep and bloop yourself using mouth sounds whenever you press on something?
it's good to hear when you get hit so you can make sure not to get hit. also, the characters have their own unique bleeps adn bloops! i like sans's beeps
This topic makes me not want to implement volume sliders into a game, ever, if I made one, especially if I somehow also manage to create the soundtrack and if it's a relatively short game which heavily relies on music to create the proper mood.

You think all music shalt be ambient background noise, too bad.
You think it's only chiptunes in this game... what. You're wrong.
Bonus points if you would just end up playing metal over the muted music. Good riddance.

I could kinda get it if this was tetris or tf2 or some arcade game you could play over and over or on the side but not in the case of this.

I understand the concern of wanting a volume slider, I like when games have that option, but I think getting a refund for the game just because you dislike the music is a waste. But it's up to you, so
Wow, so much vitriol and hostility over the fact that I don't like the music and want to turn it off. I don't need to listen to something for hours just to deice if I like it or not. No I do not like the music, just like I don't like pop, jazz, rap, or dub-step.

I will admit I made a mistake in assuming that in 2015 video game developers should have enough experience to include basic volume sliders. I should have not made that assumption because of the size of the development team here. I should have asked beforehand but I didn't but I have an avenue available to me to correct my mistake, which I intend to use. Refunds.

Sorry but the music is so awful and distracting that it kills any enjoyment I might have with the game. But that is my opinion. If you are enjoying it, I am happy for you.
since you are probably refund the game... this music is maybe spoiler, but still:

there is more music like this in the game, but if you find that awful, then i cant do anything for help.

Wow! Thanks! Great reply! I was wrong in assuming that all music in the game was of the same genre and quality. I never heard this. This is , of course, not chip tunes. This I could listen to in game. The main menu music and the music in the ruins is nothing like this. I now understand why others were so weirded out by me saying it was awful. We were thinking of different music from different parts of the game. This is actual pretty good. sounds like the outro to some anime program but still decent. However, it is STILL to loud compared to the sound effects but now I would no longer want to puncture my ear drums to escape it.

I have to ask, how far would I need to get in Undertale in order for the music to change into something like what you posted here?

Thank you sir/madam for your demonstration. It cleared up alot of confusion for me :Rubber_Duck:
You can actually find most of the game's soundtrack to listen to on Toby Fox's bandcamp (https://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/) That can give you an idea for what more of the game music is like.

If you are running on windows, open your sound mixer by right clicking on it. Lower the slider for undertale. Note this lowers the entire app volume, but should fix most of your problem.
This has been a feature since Vista.

You may want to take a look at the game's official soundtrack and listen to some of the songs there.
They are listed in the order they appear in-game, and have previews on the bandcamp page (well, the first 77 tracks do, out of 101).
As long as you don't read the song titles you won't spoil their context for yourself.

For a personal summary of the change of styles the game goes through in order, it'd be something like...

Chiptune (Bleeps and Bloops) 0 - 2 hr in
Piano (Dominantly single instrument) 0 - 3 hrs in
Electronic (More substance, synths, etc) 3 - 5 hrs in
Orchestral (Moody, sometimes bombastic) 3 - 6 hrs in
Drum N' Bass (Breakcore) 6 hrs in
Rock (Like the example provided earlier) 6 hrs in

So it does do its fair share of genre traveling! It may take a bit to get to the stuff you're looking for, though.

This is exactly what I do not want to do. I want to bring up the SFX and and bring down the music. I do NOT want to turn to volume down on everything. If my issue could be fixed with by just turning the whole thing down I would have muted the game after the first reply in this thread.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Yea looks like at least 6 hrs before something i would even bother with to comes up. Chip-tune and Piano are my OH GOD TURN IT OFF! genres. Electronic is my "Hope the DJ get's electrocuted" genre, Orchestral meh, take it or leave but bombastic is just snooze worthy. Breakcore is my "Kill it! Kill it with fire" genre and sounds more like random noise than chip tunes. If I could just turn the music down...damn. One minute I was genuinely excited that I was wrong and the next disappointment. You stopped me from making a 2nd mistake by canceling my refund. Thanks!

this just came in my email:
