What do I need for the fight against Asgore? (pacifist run)

I've been told that I need the Stick and the Butterscotch Pie to complete it in the pacifist manner... I haven't fought him yet, so I don't know how that will help.

Do I need to equip the Stick to do it? Because I swapped out my Stick for the Torn Notebook (mercy invincibility lengthened) and now I can't equip it again.

What do I need to do?

You don't "need" anything.

The pie will help. I don't think the stick does anything. Take the snowman piece (but don't use it!) if that's important to you. One Sea Tea might be a good idea. The face steak and legendary heroes from the hotel shop might be useful.

You can get it from the snowman near the beginning of Snowdin, but you may have passed it. It alters the normal ending slightly if you have it in your inventory, or heals you for around 40hp if you use it.

I don't know who told you about the stick, because I'm pretty sure there's no real effect here.

You have to fight him, so I would suggest some more items to help you defeat the guy faster. The Cowboy Hat increases your ATK by 5, which helps, along with the Empty Gun since if you can get 2-3 center strikes you'll do a lot more damage than the Worn Dagger, 4 center strikes taking out a sizable chunk of his health. Legendary Hero can help a bit more with ATK values, and yes the Pie helps because eating it when you're fighting him lowers his Defense and Attack values. You can lower it further by using the Talk command 3 times. You can only use the Mercy command at a very specific point in the battle, so you may as well go all-out here.
