'Your Favorite Boss from Undertale?' Poll Results [SPOILERS]
So a few days ago, I posted a link to a straw poll I created on the topic of your favorite boss from the game. And so, here are the results, as well as my personal thoughts on each boss:

Total Votes: 556
1. Sans (Genocide) - 126 Votes (23%)
My personal pick - Sans is not only the hardest boss from the game, but it also is one of the best. It has really creative mechanics, fantastic music that perfectly sets the mood and really hectic attacks to dodge. Not only that, but YOU'RE FIGHTING SANS FOR F*CKS SAKE! That alone is enough to make this the best boss fight from the game.

2. Asriel Dreemur - 104 Votes (19%)
Although not a very challenging boss fight, it is certainly the most fancy and cool-looking boss fight from the game. Of course, it is also the most emotional boss fight from the game, and serves as the PERFECT 'true final boss' for the game.

3. Muffet - 75 Votes (13%)
Probably the hardest boss fight outside of the Genocide boss fights. The boss itself looks cool, and the music is also perfectly fitting for the boss fight (like almost all boss fights in Undertale). Its mechanic of moving between 3 lines is also pretty fun, and is a nice fresh break from the bullet-hell style fights in the rest of the game.

4. Mettaton EX - 64 Votes (12%)
Probably the most ‘lively’ boss fight from the game. Mettaton himself looks really cool, with a fantastic theme to fit his looks and the fight itself. Not only that, but the whole ‘rating’ system is very interesting, and adds various new elements to the fight, such as the element of risk vs reward.

5. Flowey – 53 Votes (9%)
Hands down, the most DISTURBING boss fight from the game. It is the only boss fight in the game that’s outside of the normal aesthetic of the game, with a boss that controls the save system. For this reason, this is probably the most memorable boss fight for me, although it really isn’t that challenging, thanks to all the healing.

6. Papyrus – 36 Votes (6%)
I feel like most people who voted Papyrus voted him because of his character, because personally, I found his boss fight to be quite weak – just dodging bones with no real changes. THAT SAID, the moment when you realise that the fabled ‘blue attack’ isn’t just the blue bones, but also involves turning you blue, is one of my favorite moments from game.

7. Asgore – 25 Votes (4%)
Meh, not much else to speak about this boss, other than the fact that his boss fight is basically a harder version of Toriel’s fight, which is pretty cool. There’s also the fact that he’s the only boss that gets rid of your ‘Mercy’ button, but other than that, really nothing else to say.

8. Undyne the Undying (Genocide) – 23 Votes (4%)
I’m REALLY surprised to see her this low, since this boss fight is a MUCH better version of her other fight in the non-genocide routes. Her green-heart attacks are much more interesting here, with more appearance of the yellow arrows, and her non-green-heart attacks are also much harder. Add to this the fact that Undyne is the hero in this case, with a music to reflect it, makes this an EASY top 3 pick for me. I guess not everyone agrees with me on that though.

9. Undyne – 17 Votes (3%)
I mean, I already said all I wanted to say about her in the previous section, so I’ll just say that this fight is MUCH weaker than her Genocide counterpart. That said, the fact that you HAVE to run away from her to finish the fight is a pretty cool mechanic that shows you the DETERMINATION Undyne has.

10. Mad Dummy – 13 Votes (2%)
As far as I know, this is the only boss fight that you HAVE to damage in a pacifist run. I mean, the fact that you have to use his enemies to hurt him is cool and all, and his theme is a cool remix of Napstablook’s theme, but there really isn’t anything to say other than that.

11. Toriel – 12 Votes (2%)
The first ‘real’ boss fight from the game. I mean, other than the emotional factor of the fact that you’re fighting someone who TRULY cares about you and REALLY wants to save you, there really isn’t anything else. However, I do like that fact that when you get close to the end of her fight, her attacks moves away from you.

12. Napstablook – 6 Votes (1%)
I was considering if I wanted to even include him in the poll, as he really isn’t technically a ‘boss’ per say, more like a special enemy. But, I guess 6 people thought that he was the best boss fight from the game! Who knew?

13. Mettaton NEO (Genocide) – 3 Votes (1%)
…Really? Who voted for him, huh? Who are the three people who voted for this non-boss fight? I really only put him here as a joke: I didn’t think that anyone would ever pick him. I mean, I guess he looks cool, and has a cool theme… but… he doesn’t do anything!

I’d like to thank everyone who voted in this random poll that I put together in, like, 5 minutes, and have fun re-fighting bosses, since Undertale’s boss fights are one of the best boss fights in the history of video games!

I'm not surprised about Undyne. The orange arrow mechanics seem to annoy people so much that it takes away from all the awesome buildup.

man I wish I saw this earlier, Undyne is definitely too low imo. But I definitely think Sans deserves that spot. (and tbh my top 3 would probably be Sans, Undyne and Asriel)

I would have Omega Flowey higher. You feel hopeless at the start but at the end the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome music starts playing whilst you unleash hell on Flowey whilst he starts panicing and that demonic face on the screen starts spazzing out whilst Flowey starts screaming OW.

I would've voted Mettaton EX for sure.
The sheer unexpectedness of it plus the unorthodox victory condition made for an interesting fight, and the shooter gimmick (yellow heart) allowed for some attacks that no other enemy could've had.
And I love the music too.

I think that there is more going on than picking favorite boss fight in a typical sense.

Unlike in many RPG games, in this game most boss fights are story characters instead of random monsters etc.

Sans being such a character that it hardly would matter what kind of boss fight is built around him and he would still probably take the first place on this poll. Unless boss fight was something that destroyed his overall character.

Sans is so damn hard, but in a way that's just so damn fun to bash your head against for 5+ hours. From that very first attack, you're getting rekt by Sans; you have to struggle just to even make it to the first phase proper, let alone make it to the attack before the special attack. Every attack is telegraphed just enough that a quick-thinking player could theoretically make it through the first time, but most players are going to be clawing their way up. Every attempt you get a little better, get a little farther - before the next attack smacks you down. But you know next time you can do it. It's the right kind of horrifically brutal difficulty that keeps you coming back until the bitter end, helped by top tier music that gets the blood pumping and sets the mood perfectly. The only thing that drags the satisfaction of victory down is the simple fact that it means the death of Sans - you'll celebrate, then you'll feel like ♥♥♥♥. It's easily the best part of a Genocide run, and makes the tedious encounter grinding, relatively bare-bones story, and general depressing slog that is the rest of Genocide worth it (to a certain degree, anyway).

I love the story and music for the Undyne the Undying fight, and I really want to like it more - but I just have so much trouble even processing those damn yellow arrows. It's manageable when they're in an easy to understand pattern (down, right, down, right, or the one where they're the opposite of a preceding regular arrow), but when they're coming in from all directions, I just couldn't figure it out. Overall, it was just more frustrating for me, which is a shame - at least the beginning and ending scenes to the fight are still really good.

In terms of Pacifist fights, I definitely like Mettaton EX the most. Awesome music (though considering the game's soundtrack, that's something you can say for pretty much everything), the most interesting win condition, fun attack patterns, and an incredibly entertaining character. I wish Mettaton NEO was an actual fight, not least because I wish Power of NEO was a full song; as it is right now, it's only a great beginning to what could be a fantastic song. Beyond that, I'd love to see what hellish heights the yellow heart mechanic could have been taken to, and getting even more Mettaton dialogue is something I'm always down for.

I get the feeling that the reason Undyne the Undying scored so low is that most players who actually beat her also fought Sans and would be good enough to enjoy what Sans has to offer (even if they couldn't beat him). She looks cool, but not half as cool as him.

Having never done that route though, I voted Mettaton Ex. It has the most interesting win condition of any battle, and rewards you doing all kinds of silly things like changing clothes mid-fight, posing dramatically at low health, and of course writing an essay about him. He also has the most unique attacks in the game thanks to the shooter mechanic.

I'm pretty surprised Undying Undyne is that low. It seems pretty inconsistent that people would enjoy getting their asses handed to them by Sans but not the reverse arrows/spears. Then again, she only beat me like 5 times, whereas with Sans it was 20-something times.

I think Flowey is my favorite boss in the game, then Mettaton EX, then Undying Undyne. Sans probably 4th.

Personally, I love the battle with Asgore and the batlle with Asriel.

I love Sans and Megalovania but OMG TOUHOU AF

I didn't know this poll existed.

I would've voted Asriel Dreemurr though, because it's such an emotional battle.

All of them.

*poll explodes*

for boss mechanics i actually liked undyne way more then papyrus, while papyrus's last attack had me laughing so much! I just really like arrow key direction sequences
Quetzhal Oct 20, 2015 @ 8:00am
Well, Undyne the Undying probably placed a little lower because of the format of the poll itself - most people who enjoy challenging fights and great music would pick Sans, then Undyne, I think.

The poll would probably look a little different if it had been based on a "list your most to least favorite boss" thing.
msElboim Oct 20, 2015 @ 10:53am
I will remember my fight with Flowey forever, and it's probably the best boss fight I ever had in video games.
