Did Alphys... [Spoilers]
Ever actually help you out of a situation which wasn't her fault?

The more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that she's really the most selfish character in the game after Flowey. Most everything she did for you was just to prop up her self-esteem.
She did some pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ stuff over the course of the game, but it's instinctively easy to forgive her at first because of her endearingly awkward demeanour. Having had time to think about it though...Alphys really is one of the most flawed characters in the game.

I mean she upgraded your phone. That was pretty neat.

Undyne...never really helps you either, does she? As far as I remember, Papyrus is really the only one who tries to help you (poorly, but still), even to the point of trying to stop Undyne. Even "kill you where you stand" sans is relatively helpful on a pacifist route.

EDIT: Even freaking NAPSTABLOOK has a "big damn heroes" moment against the dummy.

This is true. But then, Undyne never endangered you simply so she could "save" you. Yes, she did try to kill you, but for what she believed were the right reasons. Alphys puts you in harm's way just so she can feel better about herself.

That's true. I just begrudge Undyne a little for all the times I died before I realized I could flee. :tbptongue:

Technically, Alphys never put you in danger either. All of the stuff with Mettaton was completely fabricated to look like danger, but the only time the player was actually at risk of dying, it was either the fault of random monsters or Mettaton going off the rails.

In the core several of the traps were redone by Mettaton so that they would actually be able to kill you and in at least one case off the top of my head there were the lasers you have to pass through (Either by not moving or moving depending on the color) and she helped you by turning them off every time they came back on.

She "redeems" herself if you do True Lab.

She did some pretty messed up experiments in there, though.

Yeah, that was some Umbrella level stuff.

She was ordered to by Asgore. The issue was keeping them trapped, which she rectifies.

To Alphys' credit, her entire research project was for the purpose of freeing monsterkind from the barrier. She wasn't just messing with souls and [determination] for kicks, morbid curiosity, or personal power. She says at one point she 'really wants this to work', even if the whole project was at the behest of Asgore.

Another thing she does is give you an important truth: A human soul isn't enough to pass through the barrier alone, it'd take at least a human soul and a monster soul. And she lays it out straight: the only available boss monster with a soul that would last long enough to absorb is Asgore. She's always considered Asgore her friend and looked up to him, and now she realizes Frisk would have to kill him.

As for Undyne... she serves you tea! SIT DOWN, YOU'RE THE GUEST!! D:< Joking aside, she also vouches for you at the true pacifist ending, and like the others she tries to deflect some of Flowey's attacks away from your soul. It's kind of weird to think of it this way, but just by swearing off killing you and becoming your friend, it's a major thing she does for you, because she has to compromise all her beliefs, duties, and her loyalty to Asgore to do so. Everything core to her being screams at her to kill you for her people, but she comes to understand and acknowledge your importance.

She also teaches you the best method to prepare spaghetti. :D

I found it kind of hard to be mad at someone who tries to delay your trip to king mc murderpants.

That reminds me. In the True End Alphys uses lightning shaped magic to block Flowey. But you never fight her. Is this a hint that theres a way to fight her? Maybe kill all the Almagates somehow?
