"never understood why people don't use their best attack first" - sans
Good question. why, apart from wanting to extend the fight with an extra 40+ episodes, does that never happen?

I assume it's because the fighters simply need to warm up first, and also because maybe if it doesn't work the first time the second attempt will be expected...

any anime experts know the real reason?

Why not?
It's all in the script.

In martial arts some strong attacks may be difficult to connect for one reason or another, so you want to wait for an opening to use it. There are some fights like this one where the strongest attack was used first and it can be very effective ONLY IF you catch the opponent by surprise.

Because if you’re opponent happens to dodge it, you’re left at a massive disadvantage. It’s better to tire out your opponent a bit. It also just depends on what the attack is, they can be very situational where you need to get your opponent into a specific scenario before you can utilize your attack.

Usually with anime villains it’s also a case of arrogance where they believe they can kill the hero with a simpler attack, and are then forced into using stronger attacks.

In Sans’s case, he uses his strong attack first as an element of surprise to discourage you from fighting him. He’s also lying, his strongest attack is actually the one before his “special attack”, which he does save for last.

If you about the playable characters' point of view in video games, their best move costs a huge amount of Magic/Special Points
