If humans have three feet I wouldn't have this problem. XD
I played through the game on a DDR-pad about twice now (Had streamed it and I uploaded the whole stream online) and got linked here by Crystalitar. I had quite an elaborate setup for my dancepad as I had a few problems with the thing:
- The up button on the pad didn't let my character move up.
- Keybindings were added onto the arrow-key
- If I had more than one joypad connected to my PC, it would pick the one which I pressed buttons on first. The other joypad would then be supressed
First of all, for me to get the movement working I downloaded Xpadder. A program that can reassign joypads to keyboard keys. So I reassigned my dancepad to convert the buttons to the arrow-keys on my keyboard. For this to work Xpadder always be on when playing the game.
EDIT: I just figured out that after reassigning the dancepad into Xpadder, you're good to go if you got the combination of Dancepad and Game Controller. Just make sure to press the button on the game controller first before using the dancepad. It supresses the dancepad, but Xpadder still has it assigned to the arrowkeys on the keyboard, so it keeps working.
But if you don't have a game contoller and only a dancepad, here is a solution for if you want to combine the dancepad with keyboard:
Then the second problem to deal with, I didn't change the ZXC buttons from in the game. For this part to work you need to start up Undertale at least once where it recognizes the joypad. Then you go into the .appdata file. Yes, the same map as where your game is saved. In this same map the Joypad configurations are saved. The file is called "Config" open this file. It will open a small list that may look like this:
[joypad1]
jd="0.000000"
as="0.160000"
b2="3.000000"
b1="2.000000"
b0="1.000000"
Look at the last three lines. These are the assigned buttons ZXC. I 'fixed' the problem by raising the numbers like this:
[joypad1]
jd="0.000000"
as="0.160000"
b2="7.000000"
b1="6.000000"
b0="5.000000"
I tried it with 4,5,7 but then the dancepad would pick up the X button. So I raised the number a tad higher. Now this will make it so that you can't use ZXC on any joypad. And it's the reason why I used a keyboard combined with my Dancepad for my playthrough.
The Dancemat I used is a Positive Gaming Impact Dance Pad, with USB connection. Normally the thing is Plug&Play.
As for the double controllers, I will double-check what happens when I plug my controller and dancemat in at the same time with Xpadder on. Perhaps I might have made it possible.
A dancepad is a platform with four to eight arrow-keys on it. It is normally used for games like Dance Dance Revolution. (Which can also be found in some Arcade halls)
After all, the dancemat gets surpressed by the controller, but the dancemat is also assigned to the keyboard. So it's probably even uneccessary to go into the joypad configurations via the appdata file.
Oh well, at least we now also know how to combine keyboard and dancepad as well as dancepad and game controller at the same time.
Quick question, were you able to finish genocide using DDR pad? :P
Sorry, but I'm not sure if this was intended for me or StriderVM. If it was for me, then I'll probably be live streaming it on Twitch(and on Steam, if I can), and also recording and uploading it.
Thanks, this looks really helpful! Out of curiosity, I remember seeing some dance pads that had Start and Select buttons on them; would it be possible to assign the X and Z buttons to those, somehow?
I did try yesterday, but sadly my leg coordination is not good enough yet to beat Undyne. Need more DDR practise.
My dancepad indeed has a start and select button and I thought about using them. Normally, Undertale didn't pick them up at that point so I kind of waved it off. However, coming back to your question I went to have a look into Xpadder since that program can register ALL buttons on gamepads. So I tried inserting those in Xpadder and yes, that means assigning those too to keyboard keys but that does make it possible to assign the X and Z button.
Aside from that, I should also note that I found out by accident that somehow Undertale can register the C button if I step with one foot on the edge inbetween the up- and left panel. I have no idea why it does this, but it only seems to do that if I step in between them. ( tried the other edges right away when I figured this out but there was.)
