Answer: Their gender is completely open for player interpretation. Whether you think they're male or female, you're right.

The main character is considered, for the purposes of the experiment, androgynous so you can self-impose yourself onto the character more than usual should you decide to use your real name like Toby says you should.

The main character can be a boy or a girl. The main character can represent you, or anyone else. The main character can be a saint or a monster. The main character can be symbolic of those players who play the game with consideration for the game's characters, or symbolic of those players who play only to improve and min-max their own playable character. The main character can be all of this, because you allow it.
