If you spared Papyrus, stock up on Hot Dogs from Sans's illegal hot dog stand (take the Hotland elevator to Right Floor 2). If you go one screen left from the hot dog stand, you can fight some enemies for gold. If you didn't spare Papyrus, just take the Boat Person back to Snowdin and stock up on Cinnamon Bunnies instead.

The optimal weapon you should have right now is either the Torn Notebook or the Burnt Pan. The optimal armor you should have by now is either the Stained Apron or Temmie Armor.

Just keep practising until you know what you're doing. It helped me when I was doing the Genocide route...
