6 Left ( potential spoiler for genocide route )

Im doing genocide route and I am currently in the hotlands with only 6 left. I killed muffet the two guards and random encounters and then it says 6 left but I tried to run around for a total of 4 hours! Im stuck and do not know what to do... any help would be apreciated. :)

People post about this problem all the time. The encounter rate of enemies lowers the more you kill.

It still shouldn't take 4 hours to encounter one monster.

I went to the core and killed everyone and then i have been wandering ever since

now that I think about it I did accidentley go to the are where everything is grey but I went straight back. does that affect it?

You went past Mettaton's part? Is the gray area you're talking about the place before Asgore?

That is the reason why. You have to kill all the monsters in CORE/hotlands before you can face Mettaton. If you get to Mettaton before getting every last kill, his dialogue will tell you that you have failed your mission, and you are shifted to the neutral route, meaning you screwed up your genocide run.
