A major hint inside the Snowdin Librarby (that most of us didn't even notice)
Note: This includes Genocide and Pacifist spoilers

Inside the Snowdin Librarby (that ain't a mispelling, that's literally what it's named) a specific book can be found near the centre of the library wall. It is the orange-coloured book shelf. Upon reading, it will inform that....

'Because they are made of magic, monsters' bodies are attuned to their SOUL. If a monster doesn't want to fight, its defenses will weaken. And the crueller the intentions of our enemies, the more their attacks will hurt us. Therefore, if a being with a powerful SOUL struck with the desire to kill... Um, let's end the chapter here...'

Then the text finishes.

Apparently, as said in the book - monsters are stronger or weaker depending on their current feelings. Think about it for a while.

Think of all the sad monsters you fight.

Snowdrake's mother and Asriel (near the end of the fight, when the flashbacks are played) for example.
Haven't you noticed that their attacks are merely weak and easy to dodge as well? They're too sad to focus on their soul and fight on, and thus why their attacks decrease in aim tremendously.

Asgore likely feels sad too, but he's a gigantic beast armed with a trident. Even if he were to swing his trident gently - it would still cause great damage to a small child like Frisk. However, if you eat the pie made by Toriel during the fight, his attack damage will sharply decrease - a hint that seeing a memento of Toriel makes him feel sadder.

Now think of all the violent ones, the ones who really want to kill you, and we're talking about REALLY killing you. Not characters like Muffet and Mettaton who want to kill you with a goofy nature - we're talking about characters now that want you gone FOR GOOD.

Genocide Undyne is one of the good examples. She's so focused on killing you with determined rage. She is technically in form of a crueller intention to crush you - and thus her attack speed and attack damage is incredibly hightened, though some could say this is not her SOUL directly, and is Determination affecting her as a secondary source of power.

However, Sans is the best example of an enraged monster I could find. He remains as one of the strongest characters to support this theory. Take an overview on him. 1hp - 1 damage: Should be the easiest boss in the game.

But after witnessing his friends die one by one, the entire monster race in a brink of extinction and most importantly, his murdered Brother, we can instinctivly tell he's outbursted with madness. He wants you DEAD and GONE after being torn from his good life.

His madness grew so strong, it attuned his 1-damage soul into the hardest fight in the game.

Sans is Ness? Sans is a Revenant? I won't agree with those theories. I just believe that the only reason why Sans is super strong is because of his angry SOUL that raised his fighting capabilities.

For some reason, even though the book is describing Monster's SOULs - I have a feeling Chara can gain power with anger too.

Agree or not?

Here's a video of the text being narrated, if you're curious. Just note - it's not me.

Wow. So, If we have complete control, During sans fight, we could just show him loads of pictures of Papyrus, Snowdin, Grillby's bar and all and he'd get weak.

Well this is more to explain why you deplete almost a third (or all in genocide) of the HP bar of some bosses like Toriel and Asgore when you make the final strike.

Asgore and Toriel have the same stats when they fight you, both are boss monsters too.

Think about that, they have the same stats, but Asgore is the only one who truly accepts the fact that he will have to kill you for his people, while Toriel will not do it. No wonder he's a much harder boss, he has the will to kill you.

Also this is kinda funny for another reason, all that power you gain as Chara in genocide means nothing to other humans, only monsters.

No, doing that would make him more powerful, since that would increase Sans' will to fight.

The reason why eating pie and talking to Asgore reduces his strength is because doing those things reduces his will to fight you.
