Mettaton is male as a robot, as he is constantly referred to as "he". However it's possible, due to some hints in the game, that Mettaton was a female ghost before becoming a robot, but it's never outright stated.

Personally I think there is supposed to be somewhat of a transgender message with Mettaton's character. Especially due to Mettaton's talk about wanting a special "body", and the lion guy that wants to wear a dress after seeing Mettaton in it.

If I recall correctly, Mettaton as a robot is reffered to with male pronouns (except in one TP exclusive scene, where a neutral pronoun is used, if my memory of the prepatch text dump is still accurate). Maybe I'll hunt it down.

EDIT: The one time MTT is (maybe) not refferred to as a male. I say maybe since "it" could grammatically be the door, key, or house even though MTT would be the mostly likely antecedent.

Mettaton as a ghost is referred to with only gender neutral pronouns.

Actually all the ghosts (including possesed dummies, but not MTT), all the humans, and Monster Kid are only specifically referred to by gender neutral pronouns.
