Undertale
What games that actually inspired Undertale?
I know Nintendo's Earthbound/Mother series is one of the major inspirations to this game since Toby Fox is a huge fan of that series. But, are there anymore games that inspired Undertale?

Nice necro bud
Honestly, I didn't really played Earthbound for like a long time. But I feel like I might return to it. (I only have earthbound on my Wii U and mini snes)
I think Crono Trigger also inspired it in a few ways.
A llittle known inspiration of UnderTale is of a game called "Moon: Remix RPG Adventure", (as cited by Toby Fox's own Twitter)

It was made by a couple of ex-square devlopers, was only released on PS1 in Japan, but a lot of the core ideas in this game eventually became part of Undertale's foundation:
  • A game that is self-aware of being a JRPG, both parodying some aspects while deconstructing others.
  • A [prolouge] player character that repersents the typical RPG "Hero": A warrior obsessed with killing thousands of monsters and animals to gain "experience points".
  • A child protagisnt who's goal is to help all of the NPCs and the souls of all the animals that were killed to obtain "Love."
  • A cast of uniquely drawn characters with personalities that are deeper than their generic, RPG archtypes.

Moon sold very poorly on release in 1997 (the same year Final Fantasy 7 was out,) but for the very few people that did play it, they seemed to have really enjoyed it.
Messaggio originale di SandDollar11:
Toby Fox used alot of his music from the webcomic Homestuck to inspire most of the Undertale soundtrack...not really a game, but Toby Fox did work with Andrew Hussie in making the Homestuck soundtrack.
wait... I thought the only one he used was Megalovania???
I'm not sure if this is mentioned, but I've seen/read about some interesting ideas about Undertale's connection to Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. For instance, some of the songs featured in the Papyrus Date Scene are very reminiscent of Ace Attorney music, as well as the whole inspecting his outfit segment being a reference to the style of searching for clues present in the franchise. As well as Mettaton's attitude being similar to that of Maximillion Galactica from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All, as well as Mettaton EX's appearance resembling Matt Engarde's appearance from the same game.
