No Mercy, and Genocide
Hey, I'm wondering, what's the difference between no mercy, and genocide?

Idunno. I think No Mercy is basically a Jackass version of Neutral, and Genocide is straight up murder everything.

What do you mean by "Jackass version of Neutral"?

Genocide is specifically eradicating anything and everything you see with the express intent to leave nothing behind.

No Mercy means that while you aren't trying to genocide the entire underground, youre not sparing anyone who you may come across either.

genocide is completely destroying everything in an area, going back to save points to check how many there are left. No mercy is just doing it normally and killing everything you encounter, but not going and checking how many there are left and everything. In a no mercy run you don't kill everything, but you do kill everything you happen to encounter.

No Mercy - you accidentally kick away a kid's football. It just so happened to be near your foot when you kicked.

basically, you kill everything you come across, but you don't go out of your way to kill everything.

Genocide - PUNT THAT F:sans:CKER TO ALBUQUERQUE

Kill everything. Grind for XP. Check your save points to see how many are left in the area. Determination.

No Mercy (1)-Kill everything yuo run across, btu don't go out of the way to grind. Results in a neutral ending. Also what many semi-blind first time players accidentally do if they actively decide to go for geno as their first run.

No Mercy (2)-Insecure, lying "fans" who "claim" toby said to not call the Genocide run Genocide and repeatedly refuse to provide conclusive evidence to their false claims. Between (1) already being an established term AND Genocide being a more accurate descriptor of what actually goes down in genocide, genocide is the more accurate name.
Not liking the G word is fine. OUTRIGHT LYING about why we shouldn't use the G word, however, is not fine. That makes you worse than Flowey as even Flowey has the decency to avoid knowingly making false statements (even if he tends to overestimate his ability to kill you).

Genocide-Intentionally grind and kill enemies in EACH ZONE before fighting that zone's boss. Until the phrase "but nobody came" replaces the battle encounters (note: morse code on FIGHT background does not count). THEN kill the boss of that area. Most fights will be insanlely easy, except for a couple infamously tough ones.
For areas after the Ruins, save points will display the # of enemies you still need to kill. Most puzzles will be disabled. there's some additional lore, mostly focused on Sans, Flowey and the first child
"No Mercy" is simply killing every character you just happen to come across. But you don't purposely grind monster encounters to fill the requirements to get the actual Genocide Route. The main rule is you aren't allowed to use the [Mercy] option on anyone, hence the name "no mercy".

"Genocide" requires grinding and killing a specific number of monsters in each area of the game before fighting the boss of the area, however you are allowed to spare most monsters as long as you eventually reach the kill quota. This route changes the game progression drastically, and leads to the hardest boss fights in the game.

That being said, the Genocide route actually ends with the entire world being destroyed, and Undyne even remarks that you plan to kill everyone, not just monsters. So the term genocide doesn't actually correctly describe the route. If anything it should technically be called the "Omnicide Route" . As you aren't specifically targeting monsters.
Also for those that try to say the term "genocide" is offensive, the Holocaust was NOT the only genocide in history...

Minor Question since we're on the topic of No Mercy: Are you allowed to flee? Or do you HAVE to kill everything? Considering fleeing and sparing are two entirely different things.

From the earlier comments (disregard mine, I'm a goof, I've never attempted the run so how would I know?) it looks like that in every battle you get into, you kill, but you don't actively try to grind.

I'd say no since flee is a [Mercy] option.
