Human souls persist after death, so Chara's soul must have gone somewhere after Asriel's death.
I think I have a nice theory for them being the same person.
Frisk became a vessel for Chara's soul when he/she fell into the flower bed where Chara's body was buried. How? Chara's body still had part of their soul inside it, left over through the power of determination, also a reason why the Chara/Asriel fusion didn't ever reset until more determination was injected into Flowey by Alphys: because some of the determination/soul was left in Chara's body.
It's proven that souls can act on their own and even leave a body if the body is weak enough, so the Chara half of Flowey eventually reset on it's own, leaving Flowey without enough determination to reset anymore, and becoming Frisk who jumped into the Underground and lost their memory doing so. Also ending up resetting to the last time the world reset - which was when Flowey did it, resetting to the present time instead of the past. Frisk looks slightly different because part of a different human's determination was used to reset - also possibly a reason for losing memory and/or being a good person. But Frisk's soul was essentially the same as evil Chara's, so evil Chara was able to reside inside Frisk and take over if Frisk's soul got strong enough.
Wasn't Chara buried in the throne room?
Asriel was buried in the throne room. And I feel like I heard someone say Toriel took Chara's body to the ruins, but I'm not sure. Where they were buried doesn't really need to matter anyway.
Of course it does! Otherwise if Frisk landed on just a normal flowerbed, then surely doesn't that discredit the theory?
- The other six humans all have their own coffins.
- Frisk is still alive, and is generally known not to be Chara, even if no one knows their real name (only Flowey/Asriel ever actually makes that mistake). Asgore's plans would presumably have ended with Frisk needing a coffin, but it is unlikely that Asgore would have ordered the wrong name to be written on it. He sucks at naming things, but not THAT much.
- We never hear about any other humans falling
.But we also know that Toriel definitely took Chara's body to the Ruins and buried it there. My guess is that Chara's body was initially entombed in the castle, but Toriel took it when she left Asgore and buried it in the Ruins. Are we sure that Chara's body is buried at the spot where Frisk landed, though? I got the impression it was buried under the ominous black tree near Toriel's house.
Purely out of curiosity, where is this mentioned?
Chara represents the character that you create (you choose their name, you make them strong, get exp, LV up, and if the game consumes you, you will end thinking that you are your own fictional character and you will hurt everyone that you love)
It's a soul, it doesn't have to be in the body, they can move around. Part of the reason they're in the capsules is probably so they don't just float off.
