Am I a bad person?
I seriously dislike Toriel. She's clingy, overbearing, and incredibly rude towards Asgore who was forced by circumstances out of his control to kill. She doesn't seem empathetic towards the problems of anyone else, and has massive commitment issues. Is there some sort of appeal I'm not seeing here that makes people like her?

I don't think that you're a bad person at all. To be honest I don't really like Toriel either she's to... overprotective. I also don't really like her because Asgore just wanted to see her again, and when he did Toriel was being rude. I think people REALLY like her because they ship her with Sans...

She's a mother who lost both her children (and any other humans that fell down that she found before they died) and is very lonely. She doesn't (just) hate Asgore for killing the humans, she hates him because he has the ability to leave the barrier by taking one of the human souls they have and getting enough souls himself to break the barrier but he doesn't. He leaves everyone trapped underground because he is too scared and doesn't want to hurt anyone. It's a very hard situation for them

Eh, I don't think Toriel's soul plan would work very well. After all, the second asriel came close to a human on the surface he got zerg rushed, and I don't Asgore is stealthy enough to avoid detection. Also, I get the feeling toriel would just have complained that he had killed at random if he went with that plan.

sad goat child got zerg rushed but also didn't fight back, if he had then they would have all been killed with ease. ...Toriel would still hate Asgore though

If you really break down each character you'll find that not one of them is perfect. That is what makes them relateable and why we each resonate with different ones. We don't all have the same idea of a perfect friend and we all find at least certain people annyoing. Don't feel bad. It's part of the execlence of this game.

I only hate Toriel when people make her love Sans and hate Asgore.

Her appeal is as a mother figure. Many sadly did not have such a vital part of growing up, that presence, the loving nurturer one who is always there for you even when it might be stifling or uncomfortable.

I think she's supposed to make you feel uncomfortable, actually, as a sort of fledgling instinct. When you can't stand her overbearing nature, and realizing that she does not change when you do, that is something every single person must face, and what every single human can relate to. Leaving home.

Not liking Toriel for the above reasons as stated in the OP is perfectly fine! I hated how they tarnished her character by making her so unrepentantly cruel against Asgore. Did nothing cool down over the hundred-plus years of their divorce? Did nothing get reconciled? Everyone else loves him, despite their being trapped by his decisions. It seems the only one not happy with him is Toriel, in her self-imposed exile. She's bitter and selfish, and it clashed so much with her character. It made her not good.

Her bitterness soured the Pacifist ending. It made me not like it. And it made me not like her as a character, edging out and leaving Undyne as my favorite. She stayed consistent; "Tori" did not. Which makes you wonder! How much of her nurture is false? Why is she a different person around different people? If she is hundreds of years old, how is she no wiser than the humans? All set to this unfitting tooty-toot calliope for what is supposed to be the BEST ending. It sucks, and it nearly derailed the entire effing story.

People could only love Toriel for how she first appears; as a mother. Anything beyond the ruins is just horrible for her...

Maybe this detachment and disillusionment is how Toby wished to tell a story of growing up, to a generation that refuses to grow up. Maybe it's a panacea and spiked with a wake-up call. It must have something to do with this.

Oh man, she managed to love such a dumbass as Asgore is. :)
