What happens when you kill everyone but spare Sans?

I just watched a video on youtube where a guy did the sans fight and didn't get hit and didn't hit sans and it got me wondering, what happens when you do the genocide run but you don't kill sans?

will you still have to give up your soul to save the world or will something special happen?

please tell me as I don't want to risk losing my soul forever.

You pretty much can't spare Sans. If you use mercy when given the opportunity, You get thrown into an unavoidable death trap.

Literally, after you kill sans and leave the room you have to modify your game files to prevent losing your soul. He is effectively your last chance to reset and avoid losing your soul.

You can avoid losing your soul as long as you don't start the cutscene in the throne room. You can actually reset after beating Sans.

Dont do that, losing your soul is part of the run, its not over untill you do.

its impossible to spare sans once you have killed everyone else, sans is a punishment for your sins, and attempts to spare sans ends with him killing you with no remorse. (aka get dunked on!!!!!!!)

I actually reset before killing Flowey in the throne room. Right when he says please don't kill me and I did a true pacifist run just fine after that.
