Undertale

Some fangames suck. SOME! NOT ALL!
It's so cringy when people make fan games and make characters

T A L K L I K E T H I S B E C A U S E I T ' S " E D G Y "

or whyever they do it.

Y O U S O U L D A T L E A S T H A V E A F E W S P A C E S

inbetween each word.

Also, almost everyone who makes a fangame with Gaster in it assumes Gaste ris a bad guy who wants to kill everything, like Chara. Gaster is just a scientist, not a murderer!

The chara fights are so cringy too. Way out of character diolouge, cringy "jump scares", and a lot more.

Please make your fangames good, like UnREDtale.

XD when i put spaces in between the words when i told people to put more spaces, it shortened it to 1 space.

Silly steam.

I won't even going into the expected range of ages or writing experience for the fangame makers. Just know that most solo devs and/or small teams are still learning and most don't exactly pop out an Undertale or even a Dust: An Elysian Tail as their debut title.

I was actually reading one fanwork last night. It seemed to be screenshots of a game maker or RPG maker made game with UT based sprites, and not a full fledged playable game, where the first couple months of content was HORRIBLY Engrished. Like VERY blatantly an English as Second Language or Google Translate issue. Sometimes three times within a single box. But then once they got to Home, the wrting errors became only once every about 6-12 text boxes instead of averaging 1+ per box.

OK, I haven't played or watched many fangames to be fully honest. Also, in the actual game, Papyrus and Mettton are consistently all caps while Sans and Napstablook are excessively lower-case based. And Undyne is prone to frequent fits of allcaps when excited. Some of the odd formatting may be either a limitation of their software or a lack of programming knowledge. Lack of proper fonts and maybe poor attempts to overcompensate for such, etc.

I will agree with the "why is Gaster always evil in fangames?" thing. At least in the games where they don't end in demo left in limbo before his character's character gets revelaed. Fancomics and fanfics seem to be a little less bad about making him a more balanced character.

But for the out of character Chara, is it out of character by ALL major interpretations? Or only by your own singular interpretation.

In particular for it to TRULY be out of character for it would have to fail all the following potential interpretations and not sound at all like...

A child (obvious)

The white text neutral/pacifist narrator (extremely well supported theory, but my link broke)

The genocide checks text and red text (obvious)

An evil demon who comes when its name is called (semi-obvious, post geno geno ending)

The geno ending character (obvious)

And one slight headcanon one based by extension of geno ending. I'd like to add "not sound at all like Toriel" based on Chara's brother's dialogue sharing some clear influences from Asgore [Howdy! Golly, etc] while Chara's post-geno dialogue (and non-geno narration and humor, if you believe Chara is narrator of all routes) at times being a bit more advanced, seems almost as if they were raised by a literature lover. Combined that with just how doting Toriel is towards humans and it's quite possible she rubbed off on them a little bit at some point.

When I say out of character chara diolouge, i mean fan games were you can spare chara, or chara spares you. Chara has no mercy and will never accept mercy. It's (I say it for 2 reasons. A: Unspicified gender and B: Not exactly your average human) a killer, who thinks in terms of kill, don't be killed, unless getting killed helps kill (Erasing the world would leave her just wondering through the empty game files, which i count as being dead). Chara is the opposite of Frisk, Chara kills everything. even if it's friendly, Frisk spares everything, even if it's hostile.

Ah. I misunderstood what was meant by out of character dialogue.
I thought you meant HOW they phrase things was wrong
As opposed to what you actually meant. Which is more WHAT they do/talk ABOUT is wrong.

While there are still reasonable interpretations of Chara that might show/accept mercy, that's mostly in situations where Genocide isn't completed yet. Probably anything pre-Sans "could" work if written well enough. Based on some of the narrator text in New Home still showing that their emotional detachment isn't yet completed.

Or, obviously, during the timeframe when young Chara and young Asriel were still alive could work since killing Asriel would be the safer/easier/more logical choice if they were purely about killing since they seemingly had no way to know that BOTH souls got control of the merged form.

But I suspect most fan fights that try to fit into the main game's timeline would occur sometime post-Sans (or on a post-geno run, either way) which would be too late for Mercy. Plus post-Sans would be LV20 and IIRC, at LV20 the Mercy button doesn't even exist on the combat menu anymore.
