How do FIGHTS take place in the Undertale Universe?
Most fanart or animations depict the protagonist dodging around projectiles real-time, as though the characters actually do use the attacks you see during a FIGHT. This means that Papyrus and Sans would summon magical bones to attack you and Undyne magical spears, etc. This would make sense if the SOUL you see during a FIGHT is just a representation of you...

But what about characters such as the Greater Dog? Do they call on an actual dog? An ethereal magical dog? Or are the attacks you see in FIGHTS just representations of the characters trying to hit you?

What do you think?

I mean, if you're dodging spears from a Certain Fish :undyne: who uses only spears, chances are you're actually dodging spears in in-game real-life

Judging by the way you run away from ones that actually appear from thin-air in the real world before confronting her, it's clear they're magic. But that still makes attacks like the Greater Dog's curious. And what about Doggo? I'm pretty sure Doggo doesn't have a sword... even a magic one.

my theory is that magic is reactive to will and emotion.
and that when ever your physically hit with it, your soul trys to sheild you from the damage because of your will not to get hurt,
which is what the bullet box and dodging is doing, trying to redirect the magic away from harming you. (like with undynes spear dodge run thing. if a spear hits you you get a bullet box and gotta dodge the hits. and if you do you take no damage.)

Given events in the game like how undynes spear can break tables. but that toriel can react to you being hurt. yet npc's in town dont seam to see an obviously human soul in you.

i think even when the soul gets hit its still sheilding you from most the physical damage. but that it still leaves surface wounds. which would explain why you can survive being hit with something capable of breaking a table with out it breaking you in a single shot.
and why monsters think humans are so strong when physically, undyne is obviously far stronger then a human.

this still leave a number of mysterys though like the mad dumby throwing a knife at you.
or mettaton trying to kick you. or those dogs with the axes trying to hit you. which would seam like physical attacks. so im guessing some mix of physical dodging is included in there as well.

While the dogs leaping at you probably still counts as a magic attack since monsters themselfs are mostly made of magic.

perhaps in the presense of magic a soul can also make a sheild against physical attacks when it normally cant?.

I'm of the opinion that monster attacks target the soul rather than the body.
