Undertale
Why is New Home grey?
After all, it's not going to be some kind of quirky interior design feature. Is it supposed to elicit something emotionally?

Then why isn't the reading chair in colour? It's the best thing in his house.
He doesn't think is cool enough to have color
The reading chair is bae. There's a secret in UnderTale where, if you wait long enough, it converts into an aeroplane.

Why am I not grey?
Because you are cool, Gold.
wait how do you know that? STALKER
no, but in all seriosness i think new home is grey for emotinality resons.
I believe it is to reinforce the idea that New Home as a location exists in the game as a memory of Toriel's house, to remind you of the journey you've made and all that you've left behind you.

(Sorry, New Home always made me cry)

I think it's supposed to represent something emotionally. It's like a grey RUINS. It's meant to represent memories and stuff. I don't know.
im with both of you guys. those are GREAT reasons.
It's probably just so that it's different to home, but similar. Personally, I think it would have worked much better swapping their appearances, since New Home is associated with feelings of hope, and it was once the home of a happy, thriving family, whereas Home is where Toriel has been living in self-imposed exile for years.
I think it's grey because it represents something that once was, but no is not. Just like the Grey NPCs/Gaster's followers. A happy family existed in the house, but now it's devoid of any feeling besides sorrow and regret.
I believe that the reason New Home is grey may be because it was Toriel and Asgore's original home, and when Toriel left, that kind of meant the turning point where Asgore went ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy and just started killing off humans to get their souls and break the barrier. Namely, Toriel took all the color with her.

Although, from the player's perspective, and my first thoughts when I first played the game, it looks almost as if it was meant to put a certain feeling of nostalgia, or rememberance in the player from the RUINS.

Honestly, I really don't know. That's just my take on it all.
I wonder whether Toriel and Asgore resided in Home before they moved out of the Ruins.
i sometimes wonder, our we as an community overlooking things? is the house just grey becuase toby said "hey i think ill make this house grey just for the fun of it"...
probobly not. but you never know.

I don't know, but I've wondered this ever since first played UnderTale.

I think it looks horrible.
My theory is that the home that is grey doesn't really exist, but it's a memory like when Undyne attacks you and you fall into the flowers and see that "Oh you fell my name is Asriel" flashback. Think about it: Does it really make sense that there are 2 houses exactly the same but one of them is grey and it's like when Chara was alive (has 2 beds and all)?

You guys just don't understand Asgore's decoration.
His house just the same color of how he feels...
