After spending a lot of time reading some of the more popular AUs, I gained a much deeper respect for Asriel in the main storyline. He was just a kid and sacrificed and lost everything he held dear, and in the end, once he had the power to remake everything his way, he still eventually chose to give it all up again so others could be happy.

He is one of the most selfless characters I have had the pleasure of fighting and then befriending.

He and Chara are two of my favorite characters (side note: Chara is not evil on her own! The only reason she seems evil in the Genocide route is because Frisk's actions made Chara believe that the only reason she was woken up from the dead was to help Frisk kill everything!) Asriel is one of my favorites because he's basically just a really nice, friendly kid who had some of the worst stuff possible happen to him. He didn't deserve the stuff that happened, he was really innocent and young, but it occurred nonetheless. He also really misses his best friend Chara, which is both heartbreaking and interesting to see. Speaking of Chara, she's one of my favorites because after getting mistreated by humanity, she managed to find comfort among the monsters and the Dreemurr family. Then, when the monsters gained hope of freedom on the surface from seeing Asriel and Chara's relationship, Chara tried to fulfill their hopes and dreams and free the Underground by sacrificing her life in an attempt to take humans souls to break the barrier. While her hatred of humanity is kinda questionable, it's also possibly understandable depending on what exactly happened to her prior to falling (since we don't know exactly). And her wanting to kill all of the townsfolk after they began attacking her and Asriel is 100% understandable. The humans attacked first, and of course she would want to fight back to defend/save her brother and herself.

P.S. - Please no one reply to this with "Chara goes by 'they' not 'she' ." I know that is the canon title for her, but I (along with a lot of other interpretations seen in comics, AUs, etc.) infer that she is biologically a female due to the hair and pink cheeks. So me calling Chara "her" is just a headcanon thing. Please don't make a big deal out of it. Chara can't get offended over the wrong title since she is a fictional character.

Don't worry, it's all good, Undertale is left up to our interpretation so Chara is who you believe them to be. I doubt anyone would make a big deal of it. But I am new to the fandom so maybe thats like a taboo thing?

I also agree 100% on your view of both of them. The humans really were the villains in the story, despite maybe no longer remembering the monsters are down there or having long since forgotten magic.

I would say that specifically the humans who started the war against the monsters and attacked them are the villains in the story. That is the main character flaw of Chara (and some of the Underground's monsters such as Undyne): they hate all humans and want to destroy all humans, not just the bad ones. And the Barrier was made a really long time ago, meaning that the humans who attacked the monsters and sealed them are probably long dead anyways. This little concept of mine stems from my inference of the timeline: in the prologue that describes the war, the humans are shown wielding spears, swords, and magic. Then, by the time Frisk shows up in the Underground, you can find things like guns (the empty 6-shot revolver that can be equipped). This means that a LOT of time has passed, enough time for humanity to go from spears and swords to guns. Also, on the note of the revolver, humanity has probably forgotten about the existence of any magic since the revolver pairs with a cowboy hat, meaning that the era of the "wild, wild west" has already passed. By that time period, almost no one (or maybe no one at all) believed in magicians and such, and that number either kept going down or was already 0. (Just going to address a little flaw with my theory: I'm kinda basing this whole idea off of the Undertale timeline being very similar to reality.) This leads to my judgement :sans: of the humans who attacked Asriel and Chara when they brought Chara's body to the village. Since this happened before the cowboy-revolver-human fell into the Underground, there's no way to say whether or not humans were aware of magic and monsters when Asriel and Chara went through the barrier. Either way, as much as I hate to say it, the humans' attack on Asriel was somewhat justified (even if just a little). The humans saw a monster holding the body of a child, it's kinda understandable that they would believe Asriel killed the child. And of course they aren't gonna think, "Oh, that monster killed a child, let's just let it be on its way!" So, once again, the main villains are specifically the humans who began to war, attacked the monsters, and drove them into the Underground. If they hadn't done that, then the situation with Asriel, Chara, and the village never would've happened. Now on to the humans of the present. When the True Pacifist ending plays and we see the monsters of the Underground in different places of the surface world, there are things such as paved roads and metal bridges, meaning that Frisk and the entirety of Undertale's played events occur in or very close to the modern age. Therefore, no humans know that monsters and magic exist and they don't believe that monsters and magic ever existed. This means that humanity's hate/fear of the monsters must be completely gone by now (it's like how no one hates or fears cyclopes and that type of stuff; they can't hate or fear it because it never existed to begin with, it was just myths.) Even better, the current humans must've been accepting of the monsters if we can see the Undertale cast all over the surface world, from driving on humanity's roads to performing on stage. So the surface's humans during the playable events of Undertale aren't at any fault at all, honestly, which is one of the reasons why I dislike Undyne when she says that she plans to destroy all of humanity once she eventually reaches the surface (dialogue can be found in certain Neutral runs, although to be fair to Undyne she had no way of knowing that humanity improved). On the note of humans in Undertale, the Photoshop/Omega Flowey ending is actually one of my favorites, and the 6 captured human souls that Asgore has locked up are really cool to me. In the Omega Flowey battle, you get to see the defeated, captured humans regain some control over their lives in an attempt to help save Frisk and defeat Flowey. In this ending, you get to see a kind of justice and unity among humans that you don't get in the other endings. The souls finally get justice for their murder (I actually don't think Asgore is super guilty, though, but that's a whole different discussion) and all the souls of the humans who fell into the Underground unite in order to defeat the most evil being down there (Flowey, not Asriel).
Sorry that this response ended up being so long. I was planning to have just a normal response but once I started typing all the UT thoughts floating around in my head were "determined" to get out.

Also, as far as talking about the Undertale community goes, some parts of it are amazing while others are... not so amazing. There are both those who are chill and those who attack you if you want to call Chara "her." I'm always happy when I find a friendly part of the community like this thread where I can just talk about the UT stuff in my head and everyone is cool with each other. So thanks! :flowey:

I'm pretty new to the community, so I guess I havent seen much of it yet. I played Undertale for the first time in October, and once I played through that twice on true pacifist, I decided to respect the ending and move on.... right into Deltarune as I discovered that immediately after with chapter 2 releasing.

I don't know why I love these games so much and are literally hooked on them. I have never once looked at fan content on any franchise, but with Undertale and Deltarune I've seen a bunch already on YouTube. This franchise is truly something very special.
