But like 95% of them are.
They're all awful...
Papyrus is smoking a cigarette in underswap. A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cigarette... And he constantly has a "netflix and chill" look plastered on his face. It's the dumbest ♥♥♥♥ I've ever seen in my life.
Yes, some of them are a bit strange, but I think there are some cool ones out there.
Underfell is a bit to edgy for me, but there's an AU of that called Flowerfell that has a unique story. At least Flowey isn't a jerk in this AU.
If Underfell is too scary, there's Sugartale, which is the opposite. Everything's candy themed and sweet.
Outertale is interesting, I think space is kinda cool.
Underswap is okay, I guess. The idea of characters switching places is something to think about.
Overtale is an AU where Frisk is the monster and the monsters are humans.
One AU that I find interesting is Underkeep. Basically, Mettaton is the king of the underground, and some of the main monsters rule over a certain part of the underground. Undyne is the leader of Waterfall, Alphys is the Duchess of Hotland, Sans is the Jester and rules Snowdin(or something). Frisk is like a prince/princess. I don't know why, maybe it's the artwork. I really like this one..
One AU that I like but don't know much about is Echotale. I think it has something to do with Gaster, but I'm not sure.
And there's this funny joke AU where everyone has Mettaton's legs, and another one where everyone is Undyne.
I know that isn't all of them but those are the ones I can think of right now. I know there's a blog on Tumblr that has like a whole list of them. There are a lot of AUs that are just different asthetics, but there are some cool story based ones too. And there are a lot of crossover AUs too.
I mean, all of them? Every single AU? You can't really say that unless you've seen every single AU out there. There has to be at least one that you guys think is decent. There are tons of them, not just the typical Underfell and Underswap.
Personally I find AUs like Underfell interesting, because trying to put moral choices in a game like that would be like... well, like in a lot of other games where moral choices are fumbled and you're like "really? I'm supposed to feel bad for killing this prick?" Still, my inner giddy ten-year-old loves how edgy it all is.
Have to admit, I thought it was hilarious that they decided Swap-Papy had to be a stoner. I mean, I guess you don't want him to be a tall carbon copy of vanilla-Sans, but... really, guys?
Although, to be fair, it does bother me a little that Swap!Papyrus smokes. I'm kind of against smoking because it's super unhealthy, but since Papyrus is a skeleton without lungs, I guess it's okay?? (Why does a skeleton smoke in the first place??)
I also like Underswap because I find the idea of Temmie being evil to be hilarious.
But I do wonder, who does Asriel switch places with? Because I have no idea and it's been bothering me a little not knowing.
The concept of an AU alone is derived from laziness. Make your own universe, why does it have to be Undertales? If you want a creative outlet, why leech off existing media? You can be inspired by Undertale like how Earthbound was a huge inspiration for Toby, but just taking the same characters and adding a hamfisted twist to make it your own is incredibly lame. Even Toby thinks his old Earthbound halloween hack was awful for this reason alone.
That goes against the fundamental concept of criticism and is a very naive viewpoint. Thankfully there's a huge pushback currently happening against this safe-space culture...
By the way Papyrus smokes in underswap for the same reason he has a "netflix and chill" look -- it makes tumblr girls horny. The skeletons are basically ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ twilight vampires to them.
If you're gonna criticize, keep it constructive.
Constructive criticism is inherently unhelpful and is for people who A) Cannot emotionally handle negative reception and B) Cannot parse how to improve something based on critique or how the critique arrived to it's conclusion. Usually when people give constructive critique, they are completely wrong when it comes to the constructive part, as 99% of the time they lack experience in the department they're critiquing. You're meant to use criticism as a tool to understand someones reaction.
