On the contrary, I think a lack of musical education has led to the demise of the modern music sphere. I hold nothing against amateur EDM artists and songwriters, I would in fact support musical creativity of any kind, but when today's music is headed by talentless idiots such as Beyonce, who doesn't even write her own songs, and Diplo, who until recently couldn't even read sheet music, how can they spread any kind of inspiration onto others?
You never heard brazilian music, have ya?
Coincidentally, I'll be playing Jobim's Desafinado on sax at a concert next week. It's brilliant.

I think that's a fairly naive viewpoint. People will eventually learn the rules and maths of music if they spend enough time messing around with it, except they will do it in their own way which creates certain interesting biases towards certain sounds, otherwise why not just have robots make music instead? Music, to me, is about expression of emotions rather than frequencies sounding harmonious with eachother. I can appreciate both Beyonce and Diplo but for different reasons other than their music theory knowledge.
To a certain extent I can agree. After all, jazz is fundamentally based on improvisation and spontaneity. I'm not talking purely about theory, however. With just that one will get nowhere, but by incorporating musical knowledge from years of experience into my compositions, I can easily say that something I've written recently is of much better quality than something I've written five years ago, and that is the direct result of immersing myself in music, listening to it, playing it, analysing it.

Sure, but I mean, everyone does that to an extent. I find that most people who are knee-deep in theory often neglect texture and timbre, and haven't really exposed themselves to microtonal stuff or detunes... which actually has more emotional draw and potent sense of atmosphere than anyone can get on a piano or whatever.

Who knew mentioning Spider Dance would lead to a musical argument?

I can't argue with you over that, really, since I suppose it just boils down to personal taste.

I was being facetious....a little.

One of my favorite things to do is to take classically trained people and explode their minds with music that breaks all their preconceptions of what makes "good" music, which usually puts them into an existential crisis...

Unfortunately that's blocked in my country. Classical music has its problems as well. Just listen to this sh*t:

yeah, primitive experiments like can come off pretty goofy... i take it youre not a huge fan of philip glass either? My music theory-oriented friends get real mad at me when I bring him up

Sucks that aphex twin got blocked...usually him and squarepusher are the best at convincing people of an entirely new approach to music. I highly recommend listening to this squarepusher mix: https://soundcloud.com/squarepusher/squarepusher-endless , he's basically a classically trained jazz bassist who turned into a crazy eccentric electronic pioneer...he's insanely dope. (and i guarantee he had an influence on your best nightmare for reasons that should be obvious)

I see. The one thing I find though is that no music today I'd actually want to sit down and listen to. This is pumping in the background, and it's great, but I wouldn't be able to just sit down and listen to it; but then, that's not the purpose of it, so I'm happy with it. It's the opposite to something like Stravinsky's Firebird, which I'd have to give my full concentration to, and by the time it's finished, my evening's gone.

When you give your full attention, do you mean like through mathematical harmonial analysis and chord identification? You could do the same to texture... or rather anything that you understand on a deep mathematical level, really. I like firebird too but I can totally have it as background music, but it's probably because I'm not parsing the actual chord structures. Really hyperactive drum programming I know inside out because I know how hard it is to adjust velocity, pitch and EQing frequencies so they're just barely perceptible while blazing pass your hearing at 500 mph, so I can listen and analyze what they're doing down to a tee....which gets even more complicated as people start to create music for that reason alone... For instance, I bet this just sounds like a bunch of noise to you:

But to me, I can identify everything he's doing which makes it incredibly engaging...

Actually I've come to the point where I never think about that anymore, even when composing. By the way, do you know any good drumming software? I've got a jazz quartet but the drummer's temporarily absent.

Native instruments Kontakt has some pretty dope jazz drum patches...programming drums is way harder than just playing them though, it's like the difference between CG graphics and just filming something with good lighting. Entirely different skillset (but some stuff translates over)
