Sure, but I mean, everyone does that to an extent. I find that most people who are knee-deep in theory often neglect texture and timbre, and haven't really exposed themselves to microtonal stuff or detunes... which actually has more emotional draw and potent sense of atmosphere than anyone can get on a piano or whatever.

.....I like Your Best Nightmare, too?
Good Opinion Zone
Who knew mentioning Spider Dance would lead to a musical argument?
Also helps if you smoke weed too I guess
I was being facetious....a little.
One of my favorite things to do is to take classically trained people and explode their minds with music that breaks all their preconceptions of what makes "good" music, which usually puts them into an existential crisis...

yeah, primitive experiments like can come off pretty goofy... i take it youre not a huge fan of philip glass either? My music theory-oriented friends get real mad at me when I bring him up
Sucks that aphex twin got blocked...usually him and squarepusher are the best at convincing people of an entirely new approach to music. I highly recommend listening to this squarepusher mix: https://soundcloud.com/squarepusher/squarepusher-endless , he's basically a classically trained jazz bassist who turned into a crazy eccentric electronic pioneer...he's insanely dope. (and i guarantee he had an influence on your best nightmare for reasons that should be obvious)
When you give your full attention, do you mean like through mathematical harmonial analysis and chord identification? You could do the same to texture... or rather anything that you understand on a deep mathematical level, really. I like firebird too but I can totally have it as background music, but it's probably because I'm not parsing the actual chord structures. Really hyperactive drum programming I know inside out because I know how hard it is to adjust velocity, pitch and EQing frequencies so they're just barely perceptible while blazing pass your hearing at 500 mph, so I can listen and analyze what they're doing down to a tee....which gets even more complicated as people start to create music for that reason alone... For instance, I bet this just sounds like a bunch of noise to you:

But to me, I can identify everything he's doing which makes it incredibly engaging...
Native instruments Kontakt has some pretty dope jazz drum patches...programming drums is way harder than just playing them though, it's like the difference between CG graphics and just filming something with good lighting. Entirely different skillset (but some stuff translates over)
