How do I find the last monster in Hotland?

I've been playing genocide and made it to CORE where I grinded till it said there was 1 left. Then I couldn't get into another encounter no matter where I went. Any tips on how to find the last one? I fought Mettaton because I thought maybe he was the last one I had to kill, but it still says 1 left.

You're supposed to encounter farm in hotland for however long it takes to find and kill the last monster, and then fight mettaton.
I have to ask though, for mettaton's fight, was it just the EX fight, like in a neutral/pacifist run? Or was it his genocide variant, NEO?

It was Mettaton NEO, which is why I'm a little confused. Does that mean I've done all the genocide steps in Hotland and can move on?

It was Mettaton NEO, which is why I'm a little confused. Does that mean I've done all the genocide steps in Hotland and can move on?

I would find the last one, just in case, because it would suck if you made it through all that just to be unable to finish the run.
The best spot for grinding is the first area outside Alphys's lab, just go up and down across the conveyor belts until you get the last encounter your need

OK I've been trying for a while now and still can't find the last one. I've done some research, and the Mettaton NEO fight isn't supposed to be accessible unless you've completes all steps for genocide prior, so I think the game glitched maybe? I just edited my save to put me back before the fight and fix it an it seems to be working now. Normally I wouldn't cheat but it seems like it would've been impossible for me to continue.

Ok, so you get Mettaton NEO if you complete all the genocide steps up to defeating Undyne the Undying. You will fight his NEO form regardless if you do Hotland/Core properly or not.

You must get all the numbered kills before killing Mettaton himself, or you forfeit genocide. This is true for every area and main boss in genocide. Once you beat the main boss of an area monsters no will longer spawn in that area. This means if you saved after killing Mettaton, you will have to start over if you’re wanting to have a “bad time”.

The more monsters you kill the longer it takes for new ones to spawn. Changing rooms also resets the spawn timer, so you have to keep moving within a single room. The last monsters in Hotland/Core take minutes to spawn.

Precisely. You'll get a longer end-of-fight monologue from Mettaton NEO if you aborted the genocide route in Hotland/CORE, and you'll end up with the worst possible neutral ending.

If MTT didn't mention his "fan club" just before he died, then you haven't met all of the requirements of genocide.
