If someone would help me with this, i think i might have found a secret. Basically if on your FIRST PLAYTHROUGH when you go to your first save there is already a save made by Kris. I was wondering, if you died without overwriting that save would it take you back to Kris's save? It can only be done on your FIRST PLAYTHROUGH though because after you played it once it will say "EMPTY" on you first save instead of "Kris". I cannot do this because i have already played the game before...

First playthrough unlocks the multiple save files, but the whole overwriting Kris's save is actually an intended detail (which is good that you noticed).

To answer your question though, no save = nothing to return to
