Smash is probably rated T because it’s a fighting game.
Earthbound is rated T because there’s literally a part where you get high on “magic cake”.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is rated T, while the later smash bros. where rated E10+. I think that the entire E10+ rating should be an E7+ or something like that. It's rare to find an E10+ game that actually is too inappropiate for a 7-year old to play
And a lot of it is fueled by marketability.
For instance, there’s an AO (Adult Only) rating, but because this rating is banned on consoles and from most retailers it’s basically useless.
