Yes this is why Sans is one of my favorite characters. He is super good at being comedic but he can also scare the pants off of you when he needs to. Not only that but he is always good at pulling out uncomfortable truths.

Well you also have to account for the fact that he's pretty strong to battle too and smart. Though idk how much I'd consider the genocide route as canon.

He's not strong. Not at all. He is only smart. He only does one damage, but he abuses the lack of invincibility frames and user Karmic Retribution (KR).

His character being "chill" is one of the really good subtleties in the game, because the longer you look the less he looks relaxed and chill, and the more he looks like he's thoroughly depressed.

Watch him more, and you get a stronger and stronger impression that he cares a lot more than he acts, and you'll get hints (particularly on pacifist or genocide) that he's a lot more capable and a lot less content than he comes off across as.

I've never personally been scared of him, but I can see why you could be. Not only is he a skeleton, which are pretty disturbing on there own, (Sans isn't nearly as unnerving as Gaster though.) but also gets really stern and emo, and like you said, really clashes with his laidback and friendly personality. He really is a mystery, isn't he?
