Genocide Hotlands Help

I am currently doing a genocide run in Hotland. I killed Mettaton and went to the gray area, but then saw that it didn't say 23 left anymore. I saved, then ran back to Hotland. I can no longer encounter monsters, or I have gotten extremely unlucky. Is it possible to still complete the run?

You have to defeat all the monsters before the boss, in this case you have to defeat everyone in Hotland and then go kill MTT. If you defeated him first and then saved then it’s too late...

every monster ran away to Alphys' true lab after you killed mettaton so no, it's not possible anymore. Why'd you even kill mettaton when you knew that you had to kill all monsters before the boss?

Because I didn't know. I don't research these things.

How'd you know how to do a genocide route in the first place? Did you just randomly kill exactly 20 monsters in ruins, 18 in snowdin, ~20 in waterfall and almost 40 in hotland and all this without interacting with the saving stars ONCE?

I mean, that would be the only explanation of you not being aware that you have to kill everyone in a specific area (and Mettatton also tells you, after not killing everyone in hotland, something like "I guess you weren't so evil after all. If you were, you messed it up"

I only looked up what to do for the beginning then went from there. I just kind of winged it.
