Undertale

Undertale

Is it just me or Deltarune was very lazily made compared to Undertale?
The characters were very lazily written, all stereotypes. But the stereotypes weren’t done well, they were done terribly. Not to mention the fact that the story was just shambled together. Not to mention how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ shameful it was to even reference undertale in it. . . . I’d prefer if Toby had just let undertale RIP

Toby and the gang named the game after some Undertale lore, half the names and characters are from Undertale, and then he’s like “This has nothing to do with Undertale. So stop asking.” Maybe he’s just teasing that it’s a prequel or sequel. But even writing-wise, it’s not nearly as charming. I just wish it were at least funny. I just played Undertale, so maybe I’m spoiled. But Undertale was hilarious, I loved it. And this one just feels like writing-wise they’re trying but it’s just not really as funny or charming as I was expecting. It looks really cool though.

At the moment Deltarune has only released a fraction of its total story and character development. It’s like comparing all of Undertale to the Ruins segment of Undertale. We don’t fully know the characters or their motivations yet.

Eh really? I mean, I’m kinda curious what else can happen. After all...

Sussie and Kris got out, and Kris even killed themselves at the end. Now what?

Kris doesn’t kill themself?
Kris is basically the Chara of Deltarune.

Hmm... Deltarune certainly did enough to keep me grinning throughout most of it - but that might be largely because my affinity with Toby Fox's style of humour grew while playing Undertale; if I'd played Deltarune first, then it's hard to know if I would've found it nearly as funny.

I can't really deny that I now look at near-enough anything that Toby says or makes through rose-tinted spectacles; but I do expect that Deltarune would still have tickled me a fair amount, regardless.

Plus, like Edgy said: it'd be a bit like saying that the Ruins segment of Undertale isn't particularly funny (in fact, I'd probably say that Deltarune Chapter 1 is more so).

Undertale as a whole had more humour in, of course; but, proportionately, Deltarune is only just getting started - not to mention the very high bar that Toby set for himself with the former, perhaps making the latter slightly underwhelming compared to what you'd hoped for.

I guess we'll just have to wait until the rest of the game is released...

What? Did I got something wrong?

Doesn’t Kris at the end takes their soul out, toss it to the cage and then pull out a knife while having an red eye flash? You can’t even live without an soul in UT universe and I’m sure the same applies for Deltarune.

The Red Soul isn’t Kris’s soul, it’s a manifestation of the player. Throughout the game we are possessing Kris, and the ending is them taking back control of themself. Everyone in town alludes to Kris being a bit of a troublemaker, and we can still control the soul when it’s thrown in the cage.

You can live without a soul in UT, Flowey does it for most of the game.

Anyways I thought Deltarune was very funny so far.

I heard a theory that Kris ripping out the heart, which is the player's soul, is Kris breaking the fourth wall, telling the player that they will never control Kris.

I am really hoping for that to be proven wrong because as we already know, Kris is the human hero destined to maintain the balance of LIGHT and DARK. It really sort of did p*** me off when I learned that's how Chapter One will always end even if you successfully performed pacifism.

There’s no way the Legend is going to be as straightforward as it’s presented. It’s way too simple and cliche for how long this game seems it’s going to be. Chapter 1 has already heavily implied the Dark World either isn’t real, or is a real place created using Kris’s memories and imagination.

Simple and cliche? Oh man... do you know a lot of games that are about balancing light and darkness? If so, could you list them all down for me? (I already know two games that do it: the Bayonetta series and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's World of Light)

Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, RuneScape, Mega Man Zero, and more

A lot of games doing it makes it MORE cliche.

I do recognize some of these titles. Deltarune's Legend seems to be doing the same thing where darkness takes over everything when the balance is lost, and the balance is only brought back after the Dark Lord is defeated.

Bayonetta is one of the few cases where the Light People (the Lumen Sages and the Angels of Paradiso) are the ones who are messing everything up; Not the Dark People (the Umbra Witches and the Demons of Inferno).
