Boy, this was hard. I made a list of all my favourites from the OST, and the list was 36 tracks long. after the initial round of scratches from the list, it was still 27 songs long. Another painful round of strikes resulted in a list 19 songs long (I'm probably taking this way to seriously). A third round of strikes broke my heart as I wrote of some of my favourites off the list, shortening it to 13. Still not enough. So screw it, I'm adding an honourable mentions. Anyway, here ya go.

These are waaaayyy above the rest, so they shall be put in the section called "The Terrific Top Three Trifecta(tm)" or the TTTT(tm) for short.

1. Its Raining Somewhere Else: This. This is what I feel is the best track Undertale has to offer. Hell, It even would make it into my top five favourite game tracks ever! It creates an amazing atmosphere. It has a calm, bittersweet feel to it, which perfectly reflects Sans as a character. It feels calm and carefree, yet it has a sombre tone throughout the song. Its... hard to explain, really. It just evokes so many complex feelings for me that I can't easily put them into words. The best thing I can say about this is that this track made me feel emotions like no other song has done until then, or since.

2. Finale: This track, In my opinion, is the best battle theme in the game. plain and simple. It has a glorious triumphant feel to it that can't be found anywhere else in the game. It starts out slow, with a courageous variation of Flowey's theme played by a piano, with holy sounding notes playing during the second half of the section. This part feels to me like the hero, Frisk, getting up from their knees with newfound determination, finally prepared to confront the ROOT of the problem (heh). Then, the track transitions into a nice battle theme using Flowey's theme as a lemotif, with His Theme making a small appearance. This section uses a cool drumbeat and overall feels like you are finally stopping the evil at its STEM (heheh). Then comes the best part. The track uses a glitching version or the lemotif to transition to a triumphant variation of the section prior. This variation uses an awesome pulsing style and an amazing remix of the lemotif to create the feeling of grasping victory from the jaws of defeat. This section continues to play until you eventually win, and Flowey LEAFS you be (I'll stop now). This is great, because it keeps the feeling of victory throughout the whole fight, instead of devolving back to the beginning soft section. Overall, Top tier theme to go along with the top tier fight!

3. Battle Against A True Hero: This track is a bop. Plain and simple. Its got a cool bass line, and the melodies/leads are filled with an aura of determination, strength, and vengence, which perfectly portrays Undyne The Undying's emotions. This part of the sound would put it on the list without any hesitation, but then? Then, about a third of the way through the song, the section using the lemotif of Spear Of Justice comes in. I. LOVE. THIS. SECTION. Its starts with a melodic bridge, introducing the lemotif with the serene piano used for the melody in the section prior, accompanied by a small amount of bells for the rhythm and glorious soft guitar and choir to play chords. Then the song returns to the determination filled aura using this new lemotif. It. Is. EPIC. Definately a top three pick, for me at least.

4. MEGALOVANIA: Ah yes, what would a discussion about Undertale's soundtrack be without Megalovania involved. anyway, I love this track. It has an awesome style that is unique to it alone, compared to the rest of the OST. That is due to it being from a different game entirely! it originated in Toby Fox's Earthbound Halloween Hack, and played during the final boss. It was then used in Homestuck, a game that Toby helped create. Finally, it was put in Undertale, as Sans' fight theme (no spoiler text cus everyone already knows this guy and what he is capable of). the name of the song itself is a reference to megalomania, or the unnatural lust for power, which your character has during the genocide run, heartlessly murdering dozens of monsters to gain more LOVE, which is the games measurement of power. Great song all around. Overrated song, for sure, but Great nonetheless.

5. Another Medium: another track with a Mystical feel to it, Another Medium boasts a nice bumping beat to accompany the techno-magical feel of Hotland's song. A choir of synths play the bass, melodies, and leads, creating a cool atmosphere. Then, halfway through the track, an ACTUAL choir joins in, giving the theme an aura of mystery. This is, by far, my favourite overworld theme, and one I won't soon forget.

6. CORE: A great final area track, CORE has this aura of danger and mysticality that is similar to the Stronger Monsters (heh) in the area, which is great, since the theme never stops during your time in the core, even replacing the battle music. A great bouncy rhythm and the cool melodies/leads makes this a track to remember.

7. Respite: This track, plays At the end of the Pacifist Route , and it perfectly represents what the whole cast of characters are feeling. Freedom. Sweet. Freedom. a very gentle track.

8. Death By Glamour: This one is just bursting with energy, AND I LOVE IT. The drums, the bass, the melodies an leads, even the instrument choices for those melodies and leads all give of the bombastic, over-dramatic, and energy filled (literally and figuratively) vibe that Mettaton is known and adored for!

9. Snowy: This track feels as if it is the audio manifestation of A calm, soothing snowy day. The piano melody and lead are beautiful, and those combined with the occasional violin and flute(?) makes for a nice, relaxing atmosphere. Put this one on if you ever need a calm track, give this one a try.

10. CYRCTAHIDRAMOMPOA ( Can You Really Call This A Hotel, I Didn't Even Receive A Mint On My Pillow Or Anything): And you though STMPWYFS was a long name! Anyways, something about this track just makes me super happy. Its probably the bouncy bass and drums, the smooth guitar-like lead, and the Bossa Nova styling. A great track to be sure, and one to play whenever you need to lighten your day.

Now for honourable mentions! ( In no particular order)

Bonetrousle: Fun, Bouncy, and energetic! Fits Paps to a P! Also has a sick drum beat. Love that drum-hi hat-hi hat-drum biz.
Uwa!! So Temperate: Love the melody and lead in this one. it creates a nice, calm, atmosphere.
Home: such...a calm...song......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (honestly, try listening to this while falling asleep. its amazing.)
Heartache: Just barely didn't make the cut. Great theme overall, fits the regal feel more than asgore's theme does.
Sans: its good. fun, casual, and definately sounds like it belongs the Legendary Fart Master.
Snowdin town: Another close call. This track has such an upbeat feel to it, you just can't help but smile when you hear it!
Shop: nice and calm.
Dating Start!: yet another one that just missed the list. Great upbeat feel that puts A smile on my face every time I see It. Definately meets by standards.
Memory: so...calm...zzzzzzzzzz (another one to listen while falling asleep)
BTCYOADSG: Go bird GO!
Dummy!: Great remix of Ghost fight.
Spear Of Justice: Lively, energetic, and intense. Thats Undyne for ya!
Hotel: barely missed the list. I think I just have A bias for Bossa Nova.
Undertale: Because calm. Because serene. Because FEELS.
Bergentrucking/ASGORE: Powerful, regal, and slightly sombre. that fits ol' Fluffybuns, alright.
Your Best Nightmare: awesome Chaotic track. My Favourite soul theme is the 5th one.
Here We Are: Very eerie theme. 3 Spoopy 5 Me.
Amalgam: very creepy.
So Cold: This track is not an actual track, but rather an effect placed on Snowy(the theme, not the snowdrake) by altering the file name to add the effect. a similar method can be used on every other track which is pretty neat. anyways, this is VERY creepy.
Fallen Down (Reprise): such a nice, relaxing theme. prefer this one to the regular version because of the added section using Once Upon A Time as a lemotif.
Hopes And Dreams/SAVE The World: like Finale, these are very Triumphant. cool.
His Theme: very triumphant and serene. plus I love Histrousle.
Reunited: Great "everyone is happy now" theme. very uplifting.
An Ending: Forgot this one. Very soothing and calm.

I know, I just listed most of the soundtrack. But guess what. TOBY IS A DAMN GOOD MUSICIAN.
*mic drop*

Bonetrousle
Bergentruckung (I prefer the slow, solemn intro to the upbeat battle music. The text adds to the already considerable impact of the moment)

Hopes and dreams

Any others?
Oh boy... that’s actually kinda hard for me. What’s the best 10 out of 101+ tracks? Oh well, I guess I’ll give it a shot. Needless to say for the few of you here that may not have beaten the game but SPOILERS AHEAD!

10: Undertale
The titular theme of the game, and it easily comprises the overall themes of the game, those mainly being melancholy (because being trapped underground for god knows how long sucks) and hope (Asgore giving hope to the monsters, and the humor mainly being a coping mechanism for monsterkind to keep their spirits high) very well. Plus the combination of His Theme/Memory and Once Upon a Time is amazing!

9: Another Medium
Reminds me of Portal’s music a tad. Not a bad thing, and not necessarily too far off considering the rather industrial/technology/science theme of Hotland.

8: Death by Glamour
What can I say other than it’s the best music for a dance/pose off with Mettaton?

7: Core
Definitely gives off “final dungeon” vibes. The fact that it plays in the background even when in a fight just makes it more epic in game. Also really like the Genocide version.

6: Ruins
A nice melancholy track to accompany an abandoned city full of traps, meowing frogs, talking carrots, and antisocial pixies.

5: Bergentrückung/ASGORE
That regal sound with a nice throwback to Heartache and Determination (which is fitting considering it’s Asgore talking to you on the GAME OVER screen) just nails the final boss aspect of this theme. Too bad he wasn’t the actual final boss. :/

4: Megalovania
Pretty much THE song that people associate with Undertale. A top 10 songs list just wouldn’t be complete without it. Is it overrated? Yes. Do I care? Not in the slightest. Is it an awesome theme for having a bad time? Hell yeah it is!

3: Your Best Nightmare
It sure is. Easily one of my favorite battle tracks in the game, and for a game with so many good battle themes, that’s saying something. Why is it number 3 then? Well obviously it’s beaten out by two awesomer (yes I know that’s not a real word, shut up!) battle themes.

2: Battle Against a True Hero
This feels like a total anime battle, which is rather fitting for Undyne since she’s practically an anime character. Really makes Undyne feel like the hero of the whole game, which just manages to solidify how much of a hero you aren’t by this point in the Genocide run.

1: Hopes and Dreams
Do I even have to explain myself for this one? Just listen for yourself how awesome it is! Or better yet, play the game and do a True Pacifist run? I’ve practically played the Pacifist route so many times just to listen to this theme! That should get the point across of how much I like it.

Hmm, now this is a tough one.

For me, "Battle Against A True Hero" steals it (but let's not overlook the significance of "But The Earth Refused To Die" playing just before it - it's the pairing of these two tracks that really puts this entire segment of the genocide route into its own league). It's a piece that sounds beautiful in its own right; however, not only does it complement what is already one of the most incredible scenes in the game, but it also adds more layers to it.

But, after that, it's a bit of a free-for-all. It's very difficult to compare my favourite tracks when they all serve such different purposes; for instance, judging a battle theme relative to an overworld theme isn't straightforward at all.

Where I've thought about a top 15-20 in the past, I would finally settle on a rough order, only for me to be reminded, when I next play it, why a different track that I'd somewhat overlooked should make the cut.

Case in point: "His Theme". I've typically considered battle and overworld themes as my main music pool for Undertale, but this doesn't give the full picture; moreover, each track needs to be looked at in context. There are certain obvious tracks - major ones - which I always look forward to hearing, whenever I'm listening to the soundtrack on its own. There aren't any bad tracks in my opinion, but there are of course ones that are more likely to come to the forefront of my mind.

Regarding context, "His Theme" is a lovely, sweet little piece of music, which gets a little bit more "full-on" in the second half. But, you only truly feel it when you're hearing it alongside what you're seeing, and the text that you're reading. It doesn't need a fanciful description of how it just goes so well with the scenario, and happens to coincide with everything with just the right timing. It's so much more powerful in context, and that would surely have to propel it up to a top-ten position.

Some tracks which especially stand out from the crowd for me (but still behind "Battle Against A True Hero") - in no particular order - are:

"Bergentrückung"/"ASGORE";
"Finale";
"Death By Glamour";
"Hopes And Dreams"/"Save The World";
"Waterfall";
"Another Medium";
"CORE";
"Heartache";
"Nyeh Heh Heh!"/"Bonetrousle";
"MEGALOVANIA";
"Death Report".

With some very honourable mentions going to:

"Undyne";
"Run!";
"Ruins";
"Reunited";
"Bring It In, Guys!";
"It's Raining Somewhere Else";
"Metal Crusher";
"Ghost Fight"/"Dummy!";
"Spider Dance";
"Undertale".

(AND, I feel like some more have completely slipped my mind...)

Then there are those which are just as important - if not even more so - in conveying the most appropriate atmosphere: "Here We Are"; "Snowy"; "Premonition"; "Danger Mystery"; "Long Elevator"...

Plus those pieces which make you laugh, like "Dogbass", "Dogsong" and "Temmie Village"; as well as those with hilarious names, such as "Bird That Carries You Over A Disproportionately Small Gap", "Can You Really Call This A Hotel, I Didn't Receive A Mint On My Pillow Or Anything", and "Pathetic House"; secret pieces, like "Stronger Monsters", "Wrong Enemy !?", and "Uwa!! So Temperate".

Another good one is "Power Of NEO" - which would be right up there if it were longer, but doesn't need to be.

One which I both love and hate is "An Ending": it's such a powerful piece, that it goes as far as depressing me; it's the only piece that I can recall, off of the top of my head, actually bringing me to tears (when a small section of it plays during Undyne's neutral death scene ); and, when heard at the end of a neutral run, it's hugely reflective. Now, let's not forget another naturally reflective piece, in the form of "The Choice" - which fittingly pops-up multiple times.

You get what I mean about second-guessing myself: these tracks all contribute to the overall masterpiece, and don't deserve NOT to be included in my lists.

But, if forced to pick a top five, then it would have to be some combination of:

1. "But The Earth Refused To Die"/"Battle Against A True Hero" (as a single pairing);
2. "Finale";
3. "Bergentrückung"/"ASGORE";
4. "MEGALOVANIA" (apologies for the cliché choice!);
5. "Hopes And Dreams"/"Save The World".

If I were to extend it to a top six, then the lively "Death By Glamour" would probably sneak in.

Yes, I know that these are all boss themes, but that's where I'd say most of the biggest moments are. An overworld list would most likely see either "Waterfall" or "CORE" top it.

It's no coincidence that the majority of these choices are, shall we say, "extreme-route-specific" - i.e. can only be heard in either the pacifist or genocide routes - specificity to a particular context gives these pieces an extra edge for me, since they can only be associated with one situation; and, considering that these two routes are those which I find to be the most interesting (largely because they're so unique), both the scenario and the music work in some sort of a monogamous tandem to fully drive the feeling home together.

Did I really just say "monogamous tandem"?

Blimey, was this a long post! Still, the soundtrack is an enormous part of Undertale's emotional appeal, so its significance definitely shouldn't go understated or unrecognised; and, whilst I may have my favourites, I certainly wouldn't complain about having any of the 101 tracks stuck in my head - even something as plain-sounding and monotonous as "Long Elevator" or "Ooo". I honestly can't say that I've ever come across another game soundtrack quite like it, in all of my years of gaming.

Yeah, picking a top ten Undertale song list is not as easy as picking out the good ones out of the bad ones, but is picking out great ones instead of other great ones! Anyways, I'm glad so many people are taking part in this! Its cool to hear other peoples' perspectives on tracks I know and Lv, and see the same tracks from a different point of view!
