(SPOILERS) Sans Tips
Ah yes, everyone’s favorite part, where we decide we’ve come too far to give up now, killed too many determined mermaids to reset, and listened to “but nobody came” too many times to count. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I’m asking for tips for the infamous Sans fight.

So far I have the best healing money can buy, as well as the locket and knife.

Any tips as to strategies, alternative items that might help more, or anything else?

I’ve watched No Hit videos, read up on his patterns, and yet, to no avail. I can barely get past the first three attacks, and now I turn to the only hope I have left. Steam discussions.

So, does anyone have any tips (aside from git gud)? Please share your knowledge. I need it.

The only way to get past him is to keep fighting him till your subconscious has the patterns memorized. I beat him once, about 6 months later I did it again and beat him on the first try because you just memorize it and it’s in you and then it’s easy.

Thanks, I’ll work on trying to memorize stuff. It might be a bit hard though since there’s always so much going on!

The weapon you choose doesn't matter that much in terms of attack so a good tip is to use something like the burnt pan or something else that gives you a seperate buff. I also heard somewhere that your defense doesn't matter either but don't quote me on that.

yep, the burnt pan is the way to go. since you only hit sans once, and its an instakill, the weapon's damage doesn't matter, so use the burnt pan to take advantage of its 4 +HP buff to all healing items. also, while I don't know for certain whether or not DEF actually matters, it would make sense that it wouldn't. the way sans' damage works is that he deals 1 damage to you. the thing is, you take 1 damage every frame your in an attack's hitbox, and the overflow damage, karma, acts as a poison of sorts. because the damage is set to 1, it would seem that DEF wouldn't matter. if this is the case, I would recommend using the stained apron, since it would give you 1 HP every other turn. don't use the cloudy glasses or torn notebook, since all of sans' attacks have no invincibility frames to increase anyways!

with the gear out of the way, lets talk attacks. sans' attack pattern is pretty simple: every time you try to attack, the fight progresses. every time you do something else, such as heal, check, or spare, a random attack from a pool is chosen. so the trick to beat him is remember his attack order (or write it down if you can't remember them) and memorise the movement you need to take to avoid it. after a while, it will become muscle memory, so just stay determined and continue the fight! after all, he is the easiest enemy, so how bad could it be? =)

Att and Def don't matter. Use the glasses for your armor because they increase your invincibility period after getting hit, the weapon could be the pan but the notebook is good too because it also increases the invincibility period.
Use Torn Notebook and Glasses as your equipment. They have a secret ability specifically for dealing with Sans that lowers the damage you take.

The stained apron is not available in the genocide route

Thank you everyone for the tips by the way! You’ve all been super helpful, and I’ll try and take this all into practice! I accidentally threw away my burnt pan though so I guess I’m kinda screwed..?

Just use Torn Notebook and Cloudy Glasses, it’s better than the Burnt Pan anyway.

The Burnt Pan only increases healing items by 4 HP. Whereas, using the Torn Notebook and Cloudy Glasses together causes every third frame of his attacks to miss, as well as lowers the amount of KR damage you take per attack. It literally allows you to survive his first attack without doing anything.

Don't worry, it doesn't really matter what you use actually.

Also, stay determined! Just know, it's fun at first, but after a few times you're going to hate it. You'll want to quit. And that's exactly what the game wants you to do. QUIT YOU MONSTER LEAVE US ALONE REEEE

Some items you can use:
Pie (though you might have used it. That's ok, don't worry), snowman piece, steak in the shape of mettaton's head, legendary hero.
Those are the best.

It's going to take a long time. Absolutely. And it gets frustrating.
*cough* I died ten times in a row at the same moment, half a second before the end of the fight *cough*

AND (this is a long comment lol) once he offers you to spare him... just don't. it won't work. ;-;
Be prepared for the second time fighting him. He won't say the whole quote. He'll say something like:

It's a beautiful day outside.
Birds are singing...
Flowers are blooming...
On days like these, kids like you....

BOOM start attack. He thinks people are getting bored with what he has to say. Imagine the genocider looking at the screen with a "Get on with it!" face, and skips through Sans' words. SURPRISE

After a while Sans spares you. Well done, you made it through half the fight. Don't spare him though. He'll kill you. Or actually do spare him. It's an interesting experience. You'll hate yourself after it. Right, after you fight when he spares you (he'll dodge your attack ofc), the second part starts. It's hard to explain heh.

There are some websites that explain how to beat him step for step, attack for attack though. Like here:
https://aminoapps.com/c/undertale/page/blog/how-to-defeat-sans-guide/4d2S_YuNQq7BovM6lG8aLeDx3RRgK6V

That one helps so much.

Anyway, in the second part there is no pause. Even when it's your turn, bones constantly wipe over the boxes on the screen. If you're reading this while fighting him in the second part...

You're probably dead. Yay.

Though the bones can't kill you when it's your turn. You'll just stay at 1 HP. And after a while you'll understand the pattern of the wiping bones, and how to... Do things without getting hit by the bone on the side of the screen.

Ok this comment is long enough. I hope it helps ya tho.
Bye! :p
In a nutshell, the best sans stratagey is to fight him over and over again, till you start memorizing his moves. Should take a few weeks, at most.

I'm not sure that "monster" was the best word choice here...

Because Sans is a monster? I dunno.

In the context of Undertale’s world, using “monster” to denote something as mean or evil would be derogatory.
