True Pacifist Ending- Mettaton not present??

I played through the True Pacifist ending and noticed, during the part where everyone starts to show up to stop the Asgore battle, that for the rest of the game until the ending, all we see of Mettaton is his leg as he encourages Alphys and Undyne to smooch.
Then when Flowey arrives and everyone starts defending you as the whole Underground seems to come to your rescue, Mettaton is again not present. Then after the Asriel battle when you wake up, Mettaton is still not present.
It makes me wonder if Toby Fox left him out intentionally or just forgot about him...I really wanted a hug from Mettaton...

Mettaton was back at his cousin's house. He's were Napstablook lives. He had Alphys promise she'd protect the human while he was gone.

Yes, and you can find kid Asriel at the very beginning of the ruins where you first landed.
