I'm in the ruins in undertale and I'm not getting the red kill counter. What should I do?

I'm trying to do a genocide run and I'm wondering how to know how much enemy's are in the area. (I haven't killed toriel yet) also the frogget that toriel scared off I did not kill. Is that ok?

You won't get the kill counter until you successfully complete genocide in the RUINs. It won't start appearing until after you meet Sans.

I've read some other things and it says that if you kill everything in the ruins you will get encounters but it will say "but nobody came". It feels like I've encountered so many people and nothing so happening

yes the save points will also say DERTEMANTION sorry for crap seplling

Yes, in fact you must kill enough monsters to the point that message appears. If you don't get it before killing Toriel then you will ruin your genocide run.

How genocide works is, the game is divided into 4 sections: Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, and Hotland/Core. In each section you must kill a certain amount of monsters before beating the boss at the end of the segment.

At the beginning I encountered a frogget. I did not kill it and toriel scared it off. Does that count towards genocide?

That Froggit is only for extra XP at the start if you manage to kill it, but letting it go does not ruin your genocide run. Neither does not killing the dummy at the start of the game.

You'll know you've done it if. The message "But nobody came." appears, if save points only say "Determination", and there will be a difference in the battle with Toriel.
